All, I am trying to locate some old papers that may, or may not, still be in existance. Several years ago, Estil Boyer of Grayson County had old papers that came out of the Andrew Jackson Spurlin old homeplace. Estil may have been a neighbor of the Spurlins. I am seeking relatives of Estil Boyer to ask if they know of these old papers. Some of the papers mentioned a brother of Mrs. Spurlin, namely Martin Crouse. Any direction appreciated, Carolyn Spence
Are there any Pool/Poole researchers who have been able to locate Bluford Harrie Pool(e) on the 1910 Census? I have used Ancestry.com's 1910 Miracode index and tried every creative spelling (or mis-spelling) I can think of for him and his wife, but can not get their names to come up. I even sat and looked through the entire district, page by page, where his daughter Mag (Margaret) was living with her husband, figuring they must be living near her, and still didn't find them. Bluford didn't die until 1911, and his wife didn't die until 1925. Does anyone know where they were? I'm beginning to wonder if they may have been missed in the census. Sue Dotson [email protected]
Hi there, I have some info on the Longs. Not as much as you, but some different info. I don't know if you want the info, but it is at my ancestry.com site below. Also, I have info on the family of James Cole that married Margaret Carrico, d/o of Celia Long. This Cole family is my family, though not through James. I also have William's father. None of my info on the Longs is proven, I got it from the LDS site, but you are welcome to explore it. I don't know if you are aware, but since you have a site at rootsweb, you also have one at Ancestry. -- To reply, remove the words nospam from in front of my email address Barb Researching Cole, Warren and Roberts Connected Families-Stoneman, Haga, Carrico, and lots more http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=barbnor http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/n/o/r/BarbaraENorvell/index.html?Welcome=1020733803 http://www.my-ged.com/norvell/ > Subject: My GEDCOM on Rootsweb > Date: Wed, 15 May 2002 16:40:40 EDT > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > > I have uploaded my GEDCOM to Rootsweb. " I remember seeing a crowd trying to lynch a Grayson County slave. His name was Ike, and he had killed Isabel Mitchell right near New River. Granny Phipps' slave Charles, was arrested also for having something to do with this murder, but he was not punished. Granny Phipps was a member of the Baptist Church and she prayed for the black murderer. Andy Fields was sheriff and prevented the lynching." Memoir of Mary Killen Hollified of Wise County VA, 1920's era..... List, The above is from memoirs of a person born in what is now Alleghany County. My interest is trying to prove that these are true statements, and if the Isabell Mitchell mentioned is the same Isabell Mitchell who is buried in the Old Elk Creek Cemetery, aka Old Lebanon Cemetery, in Grayson Co VA with her husband William Mitchell. In the 1850 Ashe County NC census, William Mitchell has a young wife named Isabell, and she does not appear in later census records. Also trying to verify that Andy Fields was Sheriff in one of the counties in the late 1850's era..... Thanks for any help, Carolyn Spence

Hi Everyone, I have borrowed a group of old photo's that I hope we can identify some of them. These came from a Boyer and Osborn family, but have found others in there too! They were just in a box with no names on them! I know that I found a couple of pictures in the group that were listed in the new Grayson County Memory Book # 2. So this is why I'm sending this to Grayson message board. Tell all your friends and relatives to take a look, maybe you'll find a long lost relative in this group..There are 67 pics in all, the first 37 pictures are marked with a Madison Co, NE photographer and their are others marked Neigh, NE etc. I know that several of the old timers from Grayson Co, VA migrated to Madison Co, NE in the early 1900's and some in the late 1800's. Just click on this link and good luck... http://www.usgw.org/Saban_Thompson/nebraska/madison/nema.htm If you can identify them, please just give me the number that is on the picture and the name you think it is. If possible, you could send a scanned copy of the picture you have that might match it or maybe just looks like it. I know this is a major project, but I just can't bear to have someone just throw this old pictures away because they are not identified, which out first trying every way possible to get them identified. If anyone would have any other suggestions I sure would appreciate any advise at all! These are not mine to give away, but I would be happy to print you a copy off the scanned one, or I can even take it to Kinko's and get a copy made. Good Luck and thanks for any help you can give me! Donna
Does anyone have information about this couple. I know one of their children was born around 1910. They are my cousins' grandparents on the maternal side of the family. Am interested in this info to give to them as a surprise, they already know about the paternal side. Been told that the B stands for Bruce. And they were originally from NC in the same county as Winston-Salem. Thought I would find out what might be in the Grayson County records for them first. Thanks,

I would greatly appreciate a lookup on the 1820 and 1830 Grayson County, Virginia censuses for the following: James Howell George Howell William Howell Andrew Howell any other Howell I need the numbers in each household i.e. (013201-03001). I do not have access to early Virginia records here in Middle TN. I hope to determine the approximate age for each Howell on the census. I strongly suspect William Howell Sr. and James Howell Sr. to be of the approximate same age, and George to be about twenty years younger. James Howell Sr. may have already died by 1830, but may be on the 1820 census. I'm also looking for info on the John Toliver/Taliafero - Tabitha Howell family, some of whom settled in Warren County, TN. I have a death date of May 1845 in North Carolina for Tabitha. Need confirmation. Thanks! Will Smith
Hi Everyone, I have caught a virus. Norton has fixed the problem and I am currently virus free. Although you know my e-mail as [email protected] It is sending the virus through [email protected] This is the e-mail account that Comcast set up for us when we were switch over. We don't use this e-mail account for anything. Which just baffles me. So if you receive ANYTHING from jmharrington, DON'T open it. Please. I want to send my deepest apologies to everyone for the HUGE inconvenience. I have no idea how I got this virus or who it is from. It's sending it to people that are NOT on my address book. The virus is W32.magistri 2487. From what I understand, it grabs bits and pieces of words from folders and sends it out in the subject line. Once again, I am terribly sorry for everything. Please forgive me. I certainly wouldn't have done this on purpose. I just wanted to warning everyone as soon as possible. Thanks, and again I am very sorry. Sincerely, Stephanie Harrington
Will: I descend from the George Holland of Grayson/Montgomery County that you inquire about below. I have transcriptions of all known records related to him in my database. In case you did not know, Lewis Brewer married George's daughter, Agatha. I also have information on him in my database. The Library of Virginia has a wonderful website with many land records online. You can actually view an image of the original handwritten record. Below are two examples for George Holland. Once you go to each link, click on "Retrieve Doc" to see the original. http://199.111.106.8/cgi-bin/drawer/disk19/CC150/0411/H0804?15 http://199.111.106.8/cgi-bin/drawer/disk19/CC150/0411/H0804?16 I hope this helps. -- Timothy J. Sarah Howell (widow), had land on Turkey Fork of Elk Creek. 2. George Howell, had land on Turkey Fork of Elk Creek and probably elsewhere too. 3. James Howell 4. William Howell 5. Samuel Howell 6. Benjamin Howell (died 1799 Montgomery) 7. Jacob Rhudy 8. Lewis Brewer 9. George Holland Also looking for estate settlements for these Howells, especially George James and William. Thanks in advance! I received this from a friend in one of my genealogy groups. I thought it well worth passing on. Susan GOD BLESS THE USA! All, There has been some discussion recently regarding cemeteries and their destruction by current land owners, loggers, etc. Apparently this isn’t limited to any one area of the country, but the mountainous areas of KY, NC, TN, VA, and WV are more than prime candidates. Those who settled the mountains and surrounding foothills were hearty, brave, and God-fearing, but most importantly, the majority of them were poor. Because of that reason, and long before church cemeteries came into existence, most folks were laid to rest in family plots on a hillside not too far from the cabin, and always facing to the east becase of Biblical belief. The countless gravesites were usually marked with fieldstone, carved soapstone if they were lucky, and in the case of a gravemarker I saw at Crooked Creek PBCC in Carroll Co., VA, a carved wooden marker. Time alone has destroyed all evidence of thousands of graves of our ancestors, and many more will be lost over the next 100 years. Why am I saying all this, when it is nothing new to most people? I’m saying it because it is time to rectify the situation. There are a heck of a lot more genealogists than there are politicians, so here is an idea for everyone to kick around. Contact your State House and Senate Representatives and have them pass a law that makes it mandatory to identify all cemeteries on any land transfer and have them recorded BY NAME AND LOCATION on the deed. I know this can’t be grandfathered, but it can be done for every land transfer from this day forward. A hypothetical example is as follows: A property owner has 25 acres in Grayson Co., VA, that he plans to sell. Under the 'new" law he must affirm, under penalty of a Felony conviction, that there are no known cemeteries on the said property, OR, he must identify any and all cemeteries, pointing them out to the surveyors so they can record their name and location on the survey plot. In time, and in a perfect world, County Land Records will have the exact location, and MAYBE the cemetery name of all cemeteries within the county. This new law should also make it mandatory for loggers to sign a document stating they have walked the entire tract they intend to log and found it free of cemeteries, OR, noting areas where graves are located, as well as where grave depressions give the appearance of a lost cemetery. The law should forbid them to operate heavy equipment in such areas where graves are suspect. The logger should also affirm he has searched the deed for known cemeteries BEFORE he begins cutting timber. Failure to comply should be a Felony. While this probably needs some fine tuning, give its some thought, get together with your friends, and contact you State Representatives. Laws are on the books to protect cemeteries, so the Representatives shouldn’t be opposed to passing such a law. The cost to do this would be minimal at most. I worked one summer while in school for a survey company back in the chain-toting days, and with today’s laser equipment, they can pinpoint the location of a cemetery in relation to a point in the boundary line in the matter of minutes. Adding the estimated number of graves requires someone who can count. No biggie. Please pass this around the genealogy sites, and then call write your State Representatives. You can usually find the email addresses in your State Government webpage. Let’s save those cemeteries. Who know, but maybe future genealogists may be able to put names with those ground depressions that have no markers. Len Chapel
Hi All, For some reason the Grayson County Cemetery material (10 Megs) I had placed on New River Notes has been removed. Until the issue has been resolved, I have relocated the 'Driving Directions' web page to the server of the web site that I maintain at Illinois State University (http://wolf.its.ilstu.edu/microcam). The New URL is: http://wolf.its.ilstu.edu/microcam/grayson/drive_to_cems.htm - Paul B. Anderson FCCS (USN, Retired) Norfolk, VA
- Hi All, My update to the 'Cemetery Listings and Maps for Grayson County' is coming together (it's hand crafted and rather labor intensive). As an interim measure I have made a temporary web page that links to 'MapBlast' and provides driving directions to 250 Cemeteries (that have Latitude/Longitude values in my database) from Independence, VA: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/Grayson/Cems/Drive_to_Cems.htm Notes: 1) This material is from Public Domain sources and should be used only for 'Reference'. 2) The actual address of the Visitor Center is actually 107 East Main Street, but, MapBlast changes the address to 107 West Main Street. 3) 'Off road' destination end points in MapBlast are often ambiguous, however, the Cemetery should be within 200 feet of that reported. BTW, the 'Customize' button on the MapBlast page will allow the user to select more detailed directions. 4) No mapping website has updated their data to include the newer '911' Street Names. A map containing them can be purchased from the 'Grayson County Visitor Center' (540) 773-3711. 5) The web page above, when printed, occupies 28 '8.5x11' pages. For faster reloads of the page I suggest you copy it to your hard drive and load it into your browser from there. The material I am working on will load in smaller chunks. Below are two web pages that show the final format for the individual Cemetery pages: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/Grayson/Cems/Adams_Cem.htm http://www.ls.net/~newriver/Grayson/Cems/Anders_Cem.htm I am not satisfied with the 'locator map' at the top of each page. If anyone has a suggestion for a better symbol to use, instead of a line and dot, let me know. - Paul B. Anderson FCCS (USN, Retired) Norfolk, VA
