I have a Henry Mayze died abt Nov 1786 in Henry Co Va. . His wife name listed as Phebey - No last name. Their children were: Susanna (married Thomas Hollingsworth), Abraham, Sherwood, Littlebery, Henry, Gooding, Liggin, Elizabeth (married ? Quiset), Fanny (married ? Solloman), Phebey, and David. In 1771, a Henry Mayes sold 550 acres in Mecklenburg Co Va. Deed was also signed by Phebe Mayes. In 1765 another deed in Brunswick Co Va by Henry Mayes and wife Phobe sold to John Brown. In 1754 it appears that John Brown sold same to Henry Mayes. I also found one deed dated in 1717 for a Henry Mayes but belive this is to early to be the Henry that died in 1787 - maybe his father. At one time Henry Mayse's will was posted on Henry County Rootweb site. Here is a copy that I had saved. I would like to know any reference in land deeds, probate, etc...for the name RICE in that part of Montgomery County that became Grayson in 1792. Of particular interest are a John Rice and William Rice who had land on Knob Fork of Elk Creek, which they purchased about 1771 or 1777 from the Loyall Land Company. John Rice is listed as "Lt." on at least one muster roll. William Rice is also listed on a couple of muster rolls in the 1780's. I believe these two men were probably brothers. I am also of the opinion that they are the same John Rice and William Rice at the foot of Bay's mountain, Hawkins County, TN in 1793. They may also have been the same John and William Rice found prior to 1770 in Halifax/Henry/Spottsylvania County, VA area, and possible sons of old Henry Rice who died 1746 Orange county, VA. I believe Henry Rice JR to be the alleged 101 year old "gristmiller" of Hawkins County (I believe they have this Henry confused with his father, who was undoubtedly born 1717 or earlier and who died while quite young in 1746, per the will of his wife's father, Duncan Bohannon, in 1747. He had minor children in the home in 1746, and a son William was apparently of age by that time and probably born by 1726. I am seeing a pattern emerging from Orange County through SW Virginia into Hawkins County, Claiborne County, and then to White County, TN... Thanks Will Smith
I also would be interested as to who was involved. Hi, I am looking for information on the family of Luther Ceymour Henderson (maybe Hendricks). He was born in 1892 in North Wilkesboro, NC. He married Vergie Funk (b. 1893 Grayson Co., VA) in Independence, VA. He died in 1950 in Pulaski, VA. I am looking for any information about his family. Any information will be helpful, to get this branch of my husbands family tree started. Thanks, Patricia
I have been told that a Smythers Cemetery was moved when State Highway 94 between Ft. Chiswell and Fries was built. And that the cemetery was moved to Mt. Hope Methodist Cemetery (very close by) many years ago. The workmen who moved the cemetery, had related that only bones & fragments were remaining. Also that they weren't sure if any headstones were erected or moved to mark the new burial site. Can anyone elaborate on or confirm this? Thank you.
Would someone be able to do a look up with just the brides name? My grandmother is listed in the 1920 census with her family in Grayson County. She had her first child in June of 1922. I am not sure now if my grandfather was her first husband. Her name was Drucy/Drusil/Della Beatrice Huffman/Hoffman daughter of James Monroe and Betty Dunivant Huffman/Hoffman. My grandfather was Robert Scott Cook of WV. Any information on either family would be appreciated. You can email me directly @ [email protected] Thanks, Tracy
