    2. Linda Antal
    3. Hello, I am trying to find the marriage record of my ancestors Elizabeth ALLEN who married a Tavner / Tabner Hayes or Hays. I have a Tabner Hays on the tax records In Grayson County for 1805....and I have some land records where he had owned land in Grayson County, VA. He owned quite a large amount of of land; however, for some unknown reason he sold only a small portion of it in 1812...and then abanded his land. I would love to know the reason. It was sold at a sherriff's auction in 1816. I have him on the 1820 census for Clay County, KY.....and the 1830 Census for Laurel County, KY. He didn't move again.....just the county border lines changed, so once he left VA, he did settle in one location.. At any rate...I sure would LOVE to find the marriage record. I have looked before...using just the name Tavner Hays and had no luck...so it is possible that this is a middle name or possibly a nickname. Up until yesterday, I did not know the maiden name of my ancestor's wife...or my gggg grandmother, Elizabeth Allen. If I had to guess when they were married...I'd say between 1795-1800...only because the children were all born after 1800-1810 according to our records...UNLESS the Grayson County Historical Society would have any other information that we don't have. I sure would appreciate ANY information at all! I really do need your help. I am on permanent disability and unable to go to VA to do any research. Thank You SO Much! 3. Welcome! The only Hurley I have is a Jane Hurley who md. John Adams b. 1838 VA, s/o Allen and Judith Adams. I have quite a few Spencers but no Martha and no Quillens. As for life in the early 1800s, your best bet is Jeff Weaver's New River web site: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nrv.htm He has all of his links grouped by periods in history, and he also has a map at the top of the page with the counties of the area. If you click on the counties, it takes you to those pages where he's got just as many links. Hope you have LOTS of time because you'll be hooked for hours! :-) Sue Dotson [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kelly, Laura" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 11, 2002 10:29 AM Subject: HURLEY QUILLEN > > Hello, new to the list. 3. Hello, new to the list. Would love to converse with anyone who may be following these Grayson County family lines: HURLEY, QUILLEN, SPENCER, and perhaps others we haven't uncovered yet in these lines. We have g-grand Silas HURLEY (b. 1877) to Riley HURLEY (b. NC) and Caroline QUILLEN (b. VA) in Grayson County. We have unverified info from a message board that Caroline QUILLEN is probably daughter of Silas and (Martha SPENCER) QUILLEN. We are also interested in learning about 1800s life in Grayson County if anyone would care to post tidbits. For instance, what was the population? The economic and educational levels? Was there a social strata? Was there much moving (families seem to cross into Ashe County, NC, with regularity). Where did the majority of the population immigrate from? Whatever you find interesting, we may too!

    3. I need help straightening out a mess from the annotation notes in the 1870 census on three Hall families. Here are the families, and I will list my problem w/ them below: -------------------------------------------- 409. Hall, Eldridge 48 Farmer 600 325 Eliza 42 Amanda 22 Wm. R. 20 Chas. 16 Geo. L. 13 Lydia 11 Warner 9 Sarah 4 Minnie 5/12 (B. Jan. 1870) [An Eldridge Hall was living alone in household 35 in 1860, with family living in household 36. The ages do not coincide, however, the names do. Eldridge Hall was s/o Elisha & Lucinda Hall. Chas. H. Hall Md. Jestin E. Cornett d/o W. & E. Cornett, 1/6/1876; Geo. L. Hall Md. T. E. Stone, d/o James H. & Katy Stone, 3/2/1880; Sarah A. Hall, Md. James Kegley, s/o D. F. & C. Kegley, 11/30/1882. Eldridge Hall Md. Lizean Roberts 3/28/1847. Eldridge Hall served in the Grayson Co. Militia and in Co. B, 4th VA Reserves, CSA.] 662. Hall, James 48 Farmer 1500 350 Polly 46 Rosy 12 George 14 Cole, Lorenza 10 [This was family 718 in the 1860 Grayson Co., VA Census. James Hall was probably s/o John Hall (b. 1800) & Sally Bedwell (b. 1810). James was brother of Eldridge Hall. Rosy Hall Md. George W. Warrick, s/o E. & Betty Warrick, 9/27/1877; George Hall Md. Elizabeth Carr, d/o F. & N. Carr, 5/20/1875. James Hall served in Co. C, 63rd VA Infantry, CSA.] 478. Hall, John 70 Farm Laborer 120 (Bedwell) Sarah 60 Cole, Sarah 10 Domestic Sexton, Martin 21 Farm Laborer [This was family 657 in the 1860 Grayson Co., VA Census. John Hall md. Sarah Bedwell on 8/16/1831. Martin Sexton Md. Lucinda Combs, d/o James Combs, 10/4/1876. John & Sarah's children were: Jane Hall b. 1830; Emily Hall b. 1831; Besty Hall b. 1834; Calvin Hall b. 1838; John Hall b. 1843; and Richard Hall b. 1848.] --------------------------------- Here is my problem: 1) It states that Eldridge -- age 48 in 1870, or b. abt 1822 -- was the s/o Elisha and Lucinda [Funk] Hall, which is cute in an of itself since Lucinda was not b. until 1824 and she and Elisha did not marry until March 08, 1842. 2) It states Eldridge was the brother of James yet gives parents of Eldridge as Elisha and Lucinda and parents of James as John and Sally; furthermore both James and Eldridge were the same age in the 1870 census. 3) It states parents of James were probably John Hall and Sally (Sarah) Bedwell yet gives her b. as 1810, which means when James was b. abt. 1822 she would have only been 12. It also gives John and Sarah's marriage date as 1831, when James would have been 9. 4) In the notes on family #478 John Hall where it lists "all" of their children, it doesn't even mention James Hall that was stated in the family listed immediately ahead of it as being probably his son. Is anyone researching this family? Were James and Eldridge really brothers? Who were REALLY their parents? I would appreciate any help. Sue Dotson [email protected]

    3. Janis, According to this URL: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/graybth.htm Grayson County, Virginia, Birth Records, 1853- 1870 births were recorded as far back as 1853, so I would assume that if you wrote requesting a birth in 1876 they would be likely to have it. When in doubt, go to www.vitalrec.com and click on "States and Territories" and then click on the state you want. There is a chart for the records available for the state, fees, links to download the request forms, addresses of where to write, and links to each individual county for their own information.
