I am trying to find any information on a gentlemen by the name of "Poke" Hash. I am assuming that "Poke" is a nickname, although I do not know this for sure. His first name could have possibly been John. I had heard a rumor that this gentlemen might have passed away in the 50's or 60's. I have also heard that this gentlemen's wife was still living in that area 10 years after his death. ANY information would be of help. Thanks, Tracy
Can anyone tell me who Wanless H. Ring's parents were? he was b 1893 and married Estella S. who was b 1896. I'd guess that two Rings - Herman E. b 1913 and Warren H. b 1921 were sons of the couple. The Wanless name really tugs at me - I've never seen that name anywhere! As always any help would be greatly appreciated. Bette

Hi folks I have six more Grayson Co., VA Cems online this morning. I know a couple have some coding errors, but have another obligation right now; but they are readable, if you are interested. http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nrv.htm The new ones are: Greer-Sizemore Cemetery on Cabin Creek Jones Cem on Mud Creek Brad Richardson Cem. in downtown Rugby. Wiley Perkins Cem. on Guffey Creek William Weaver Cem. on Mud Creek; a suburb of Greater White Top City. Young Cem. on Ripshin, near Troutdale. None of these cemeteries are very large, but they are what they are. Enjoy. Sorry but I am again asking for help on the Hale/Boyer issue. I'd really love to find out who Lena Hale's parents were. She was born Oct. 1881 and married John Winton Boyer in 1900 so I will not be able to find her with her parents in a census. I have his name as John Winton Boyer. The cem record says John N. Someone else says it was Winton John. As always any help would be greatly appreciated. Bette
Can anyone tell me who the parents were of Lena Hale b Oct 1881 and married John Boyer? She was married before 1900 according to what I have so I can't find her in a census record with her parents. As always any help would be greatly appreciated. Bette
Thanks to everyone for the information about the Galax Gazette Newspaper website. I had it under favorites and it didn't work. But I got it now. Thank you!! Stephanie Harrington
Does anyone know if John A. Adams that married Eliz. Sexton if they are the parents of Mary Adams that married Creed Rutherford? I think they are for a couple of reasons - the marriage date of John & Eliz. is just over a year from the birth of Mary and they are all buried in the Wagg Cem! Thanks for any help!
Hi folks For those interested, the Old Town Memorial Cemetery (an African-American Cem) is online at New River Notes (http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nrv.htm) courtesy of an anonymous researcher. Hi folks Yesterday Dave Reedy & I went wandering around the western end of Grayson County and got some of the more obscure cemeteries, and the listings are now online, with photos. To find them, go to http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nrv.htm, click on Grayson and scroll down to the cemeteries link. The new or updated cemeteries are: Blackburn, John Cem. On Grassy Creek Blevins, Alfred Cem. On Pond Mountain, near the NC/VA/TN corner Reedy, Mitchell Cem., updates from previous listing done by Rebecca Reedy Sisk; On Grassy Creek. Reedy, Peter Cem. on York Ridge, previous identified as a Pugh Cem., but upon investigation, and Dave's reconstruction. Richardson Cem., updates previous listing from the GCHS files. This cem is actually located at what had previously been identified as the Enoch Young or Laurel Hill Baptist Church Cem., which doesn't exist. Spencer Cem., updates with location information, file sent in from Becky Sisk, also confirms suspicions that two previous Spencer Cem. listings are actually one cemetery, duplicate listing deleted. Wagg Cem. on Grassy Creek. Walls Cem. on Middle Fork of Helton Creek. Calvin Wiles Cem. located on Shippys Branch. And for those who would like to know what Dave looks like, click on Meet the Grayson County Cemetery Researchers thing at the top of the page. Dave was chugging up the side of Pond Mountain when I took that pic, don't think he realized I did it. I didn't tell him either. :-) Dave got his revenge though when we were looking for the Bill Reedy Cemetery on Jones Branch. He nearly got me killed (fell in a hole); got the truck stuck in the mud, and met all sorts of unsavaory things, and never did find the cemetery. Becky if you are out there, have you done this one? That's all folks. Enjoy. Stephanie, That is the correct address, and it DOES still exist. I have it bookmarked as the same address, and even clicked on your link in your posting and it took me right to it. I know they were having some problems Wednesday, because I was in the middle of working with the obituaries and lost the page. Nothing at all would come up for several hours, but it's definitely working now. Maybe that's when you were trying? I received this obit from my Aunt Jane Davis Altizer Bowen. I do not know what newspaper it was printed in -- but if you can help me with any of the names, I'd really appreciate. I'm sorry I don't know the source of the newspaper clipping: "John M. Davis was born in Smyth County, VA, March 5, 1852, departed this life April 2, 1918, aged 66 years and 27 days. He was married to Sarah Izabel Hill February 21, 1871. To this union were born thirteen children. His companion and three of his children have preceded him to the tomb. There are left to mourn the loss of father six sons and four daughters: Mrs. Mollie Horn, of Elk Creek, VA; Jane and Emma Davis, of Galax; Mrs. Lelia Welsh, of Galax; R. W. Davis, of Oldtown; Granville Davis, of Robert Lee, Texas; Orville Davis, of Cliffview; Chapman Davis, of Fries; Lawrence Davis, of Galax; and William Davis, of Willis, VA. Mr. Davis made a profession of religion at the Mt. Olivet church about 35 years ago and joined the Methodist church. He has often said that the 23rd chapter of Psalms was his favorite chapter in the Bible and would repeat "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the sill water." He said in talking to one of his sons regarding the war that is made but little difference to him that he would not live much longer, and that he was ready to go. He was loved and highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was laid to rest in the Ballard Cemetary on April 4th. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. H. Varner and Rev. James Bartlett" The William Davis of Willis, VA was my grandfather so John M. Davis would be my great-grandfather. Linda W.
