I might suggest that if you have had a positive or negative courthouse experience you add them to this site. I now know how to prepare myself for several courthouses I want to visit later this year. 3. Jeff, my GTGtgrandfather Jonathan Higgins, son of Vincent Higgins and Jane Wilson, left Grayson Co in 1854 with his brothers, Andrew and wife Mary Bryan, and Henry Higgins. Jonathan later wrote in his memoirs about Thompson Roberts setting some of his slaves free, and causing quite an uproar with his neighbors. These Higgins brothers ended up in Nebraska because of their policies on slavery. Their mother Jane and sister Nancy also ended up settling in Nebraska, Nancy married and died in Atchison Co Mo in 1862, Henry died in Nemaha Co in 1863 and Jane died in 1884 in Nemaha Co, NE. I can send copies of his papers if you'd like to see his version of those times. Best regards and keep up the great work for us "yankees" as our Grayson Co cousins consider us now. Howdy all Some of you may already know--I am working on a paper about the 1851 Slave insurrection in Ashe/Grayson County. Things aren't going well. :-( But that is another story. B. F. Nuckolls notes in Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County that the party that pursued the runaway slaves consisted of: Mr. John Clements, who was killed in the fight on August 10, 1851; Mr. Calvin Bobbitt; Mr. Samuel Bartlett who died of wounds received in the fight; Alfred G. Bartlett, Cyrus Wilcox; William B. Hale; Currin C. Hale, and Leftrick Hill. What I am curious about is any biographical details about any of these men. Birth, death, occupation(s), family relationships, notable accomplishments, or lack thereof; religious presuasions if any, of these fellows. I should also note that what records I have uncovered support part of Nuckolls account, and may be able to corroberate most of it, but he has mistakes in some of the names of the parties involved. Also any information on John Reeves of Ashe County, NC who owned Simon and Lewis, two of the runaways and George Cox of Grayson who owned two others, Jack and Henry. Henry was the only runaway to escape the gallows on November 1, 1851. Anyone have any information on what became of him? Could this James Hill be related to William Hill, husband of Hannah Ballard (both of Grayson Co VA moved to Hamilton Co IN) or Louisa Hill, wife of William Ballard (both also of Grayson Co VA moved to Hamilton Co IN and Marion Co IA)?
