<[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2004 11:11 AM Subject: DNA Testing for WARDs, VA, KY, TN, IL Hello Fellow Researchers! Several WARD researchers have joined forces and organized a DNA test group which will currently focus on 1700s Ireland and Virginia and 1800s Kentucky, Tennessee and Illinois. Because the name is so common, we thought it wise to narrow it down to these states. Once DNA markers are established for the WARDs in those states, we envision expanding the test to include other states. We have had astounding results in two other test groups with which I am associated. The use of these tests have saved us years of research by helping us sort out 18th and 19th century family groups by using DNA markers. Our group is looking for DNA sampling from WARD males who are in a direct line descendant of WARDs from Ireland, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Illinois in the 1700s and 1800s. Since this is a test of the Y chromosome, only males whose last name is WARD can participate. Collection of DNA is just the swiping of the inside of the cheek to get sample cells from saliva for testing. The DNA is not used for any other purpose. If you are interested in obtaining more information about our project, please visit http://www.familytreedna.com where you can fill out the "join request" form and qualify for the group discount of $99 for the 12 marker test. Donna, Grayson was formed in 1793 from Wythe County. Wythe was formed from Montgomery (the Carroll county USgenweb page says in 1777, but the Wythe Co. USgenweb page says in 1790. I don't know which is correct.) Carroll was formed from Grayson in 1842. Generally, it's a good idea to check all of these counties when searching this time span. It was in Grayson Co., and it was the correct age for John based on his age in the 1930 census, so I had assumed it was the right one even though Henry was not among the children listed. (Sometimes they miss listing a child for one reason or another.) Now that I know I have the wrong family, I have search my brains out trying to find the right one in 1920, but have come up empty. Do you have any idea where John & Mabel were living in 1920? I even search West Virginia, since Henry was born there, but no dice. I'm thinking either their name is royally botched on the census or else the census taker missed them entirely. Sue Dotson [email protected]

I pulled up an 1870 census image today and on the same page I saw a listing for a family with the HOH as Rufus H. Pool and wife Jane E. I wondered who in the heck it was.....checked my annotated copy and there were no annotations.....and then looking at the children it hit me. This is the family of Bluford Harrie Pool and wife Eliza Jane! No wonder I've never found his family in 1870 -- I never dreamed I needed to look for him under the name of Rufus!!! So I thought I would post this in case anyone else looking for Bluford in 1870 needed to find him too. They are family 181 in the 1870 census, Elk Creek District. Sue Dotson [email protected]
In reading Sue's response re: Burris-Boone I noted an Oma K. Callahan. I am searching for the parents of Edward C. (Ned) Callahan who was born in 1837, Surry County, N. C., and married 7/01/1856 to Sarah Mary Wright of Grayson. Aside from the fact that Edward's father was named Mark and his mother was Jesten unknown, I have no other ancestors leading up to these people. Edward married in Grayson county and remained there. He fought with the Confederates and was at Manassas with Capt. Peyton Hale. I have the names of all of Edward and Sarah Mary's children and would be happy to share.
Does anyone know what happened to Emily Lemons age 29, unmarried, and her son Almegra or Almeyous age 11? She is listed in the 1880 census as a housekeeper in the household of John W. and Ann Vaughan, Elk Creek district. Helen Quillen [email protected]

Nellie Clara Burris Wilson was born Aug 26,1908,died April 14,1996. I have a family tree that was given to me by my exhusband Roger's older brother Robert Henry Wilson that shows the following: John Wilson was one of five children. His brothers and sisters were: Molly Wilson Jim Wilson George Wilson Janie Wilson The father of John Wilson is shown as Willie Wilson, whose wife was Barbara Helms(or Nelms, printing is faint). Diane, I think I may have messed up and maybe confused some census records. I'm showing John William Wilson's wife as Bessie, md. abt. 1900, and his son Henry's siblings as Ressie M. b. abt. 1910, Robert E. b. abt 1912, and William H. b. abt. June 1918. I think I need to go back to these records and see if perhaps there were two Johns that I have may have mixed up. Do you have any dates for the birth of Roy, Cecil, and Mildred? Also, do you have the parent's names for John William Wilson? I will paste below what I have on Vera & John's children. I think I may have an additional child, as I'm showing 7 children. Most of my information came from Vera's obituary and funeral card, which are in my mother-in-law's collection. If you can fill in any of the "Unknowns" I would appreciate the information.
