    1. ♠[VAGRAYSO]♠ trying to determine Robert Porter's first wife, his parents, and her parents
    2. Amy Smith
    3. I was able to trace back from my great grandmother (Maude Porter b1883 in Ashe County, NC) to her father (Leroy or Lee or Leroyal b1846 in Grayson County, VA) to his dad Robert Porter (born around 1807 in VA). This Robert Porter born around 1807 was married twice, and his first wife (name unknown) was mother to Leroy and most of Leroy's siblings. Robert later married Holly, and they had a child named Violet. It looks like the unknown first wife must have died between 1846-1850 based upon when Leroy was born and when second wife Holly joined the household and gave birth to Violet. I am trying to determine the name of Robert Porter's first wife (my ancestor), as well as the names of Robert's parents, and any clues about his first wife's parents. If you have any clues to help, I would greatly appreciate it!

    1. ♠[VAGRAYSO]♠ William R Phillips
    2. SUE DOTSON
    3. William R Phillips was my husband's 2nd great-grandfather.  He was the son of Tom (Thomas) Randolph Phillips and Polly (Mary) Moore.  Because of his father's name I'm thinking the "R" is possibly for "Randolph".  He was born ca. (but before) 30 Aug 1838 in Grayson Co.  Family rumor was always that he was a Confederate Soldier killed in Civil War, however my husband's cousin has letters that William's wife had received from him and the last one is dated 12 Apr 1868.  After that letter the family never heard from him again.  I am looking for his date/location of death and whatever happened to him.  Military research has been difficult due to the number of soldiers named William Phillips.  At one time someone with an extensive Civil War database shared that in 1863 he was a deserter in Chambersburg PA and then a few months later a POW in Emmettsburg VA and then a few days later was confined in Fort Delaware, DE and then deserted later that same month.  My husband did some research, wrote letters, and discovered this was not the William R Phillips he was looking for.  So we are back where we started.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sue

    1. ♠[VAGRAYSO]♠ Re: James Swinney
    2. SUE DOTSON
    3. Sharon, I have him as James F Swinney.  From the 1850 census I also have he was born ca 1790 in NC.  I did find an Ancestry family tree (BWT2015) that has the birth as 30 Sep 1786 NC.  The two sources noted are Ancestry Family Trees (which I don't put a lot of weight in but consider it a good place to start) and Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, but that is part of the World Collection which I don't have so I can't check it.  I have his death as 22 Sep 1872 in Old Town, Grayson Co., VA.  I got that info from a person who is now deceased, but she lived and breathed Grayson genealogy every day and was involved (from a distance) with the Historical Society as well as the Heritage Foundation.  I no longer have access to the email referenced in my source (it was before web mail and the computer I was using at the time crashed) but I know she had a lot of Grayson books and access to records.  To date most everything she ever shared with me has been able to be proven true.  Unfortunately I do not show any parents, or the middle name other than an "F".  My husband is the one with Grayson roots.  James Swinney is not a direct blood relative but my software tells me he is the father-in-law of the husband of my husband's 2nd great aunt (did you follow that LOL) so I guess that's why I have him in my file. Good luck,Sue From: Sharon Denny via VAGRAYSO <vagrayso@rootsweb.com> To: VA Grayson Co <vagrayso@rootsweb.com> Cc: Sharon Denny <facs50@yahoo.com> Sent: Friday, August 3, 2018 9:08 AM Subject: ♠[VAGRAYSO]♠ James Swinney I'm stumped on James Swinney.  Some online family trees record his middle name if Fletcher, but I don't have proof of that.  Looking for proof of his birth and middle name, as well as death information. Records found for Grayson County include tax lists and census records for: 1805, 1810, and census records for 1820-1870. These records indicate he was born in NC about 1789. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Byrd in 1807 and Mourning Byrd in 1831, both marriages were in Grayson County. There are some DNA matches that suggest a possible link to a Bunton/Buntin/Bunting family.  No proof of that. Any help with proof of birth, parents, middle name, and death information would be appreciated.  TYIA Sharon Denny _______________________________________________ Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref Unsubscribe and Archives https://mailinglists.rootsweb.com/listindexes/search/vagrayso Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community
