    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hAC.2ACE/1216.1 Message Board Post: William J. Graves died Jan.17, 1876 at age 68. His son Amos gave the death information. William J. Graves' wife at the time of his death was named Margaret. William's parents are identified as William & Elizabeth Graves. Using that information and the 1850/1860 census records, I would place the family in the Coke/Timberneck Creek area of the county. Hope this helps.

    1. [VAGLOUCE-L] Ranson/Ransom family of Cumberland Co.
    2. Edward S. Ayres
    3. I am trying to determine the ancestry of Ambrose Ranson of Cumberland Co. He was living in Goochland as early as 1744, presumably in the southern part that later became Cumberland Co. He was married to Catherine Keeble who was the daughter of Walter Keeble of Gloucester Co. Catherine died in 1761 and Ambrose's will was recorded in Cumberland Co. in 1762. In his will he names five sons (Flamstead, Ambrose [jr.], Robert, William, & Henry) and three daughters. He apparently owned land on Angola Creek, north of the Appomattox River. The last three sons remained in the Cumberland/Prince Edward area, Ambrose Jr. may have moved to Halifax Co., and Flamstead had moved to Buckingham Co. around 1786 and died there by 1796. His widow was Elizabeth (possibly Douglas or Perkins). Can anyone connect Ambrose Sr. with the Ranson/Ransoms of Gloucester and Mathews? I suspect there is a connection since his wife was from the area. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. Ed Ayres

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hAC.2ACE/427.433 Message Board Post: Dear Tom, We are very interested in the Singleton's from Gloucester County. We live on what was once Bloomsbury, and the original land grant was to a Henry Singleton in 1650. The property passed through many hands since then and is now called Ditchley after the Lee's Ditchley in England. The house is not original to Bloomsbury except the basement - the basement we believe to be original to all 3 homes on the site - the first 2 were burned and rebuilt over the previous site. But we are resourcing the history of the families that lived here and how they aftected the property as well as the county of GLoucester and state of Virginia. We are the caretakers here and we are compiling the info for the current owner - Mr. Michael Suttle Jr. If you have any info on Mr Singleton we would be happy to get it! We also believe he donated the land that Singlton United Methodist Church now sits on - also here in Ware Neck. We would love to hear back from you! Thanks, Christine and Kevan Lipscomb ps please respond to ctlipscomb@aol.com

    3. Several months ago, someone asked me what was an "Overseer of the Poor". I explained it the best I could, but I have just come across an article printed in the "Virginia Cavalcade" magazine, winter 2000 issue that explains their duties. This is an interesting article about the Overseers of the Poor and their duties, especially in connection with the poorhouses. Gloucester Co. is mentioned briefly in the article.
