My Alexander H. or W. Green was supposedly married to Emily Reade b. about 1850?; she died Dec. 10, 1885. Her parents were Henry and Betsy Reade. I don't know if I already told you that or not. But these are all African-American. There are other family ancestors you may be able to help me with also. My great-grandmother was Charlotte Richardson, called "Gannie" who was married to Major Fields Green (d.1917). Charlotte's parents were Charles and Mariah Richardson. I don't have any other dates or names. Thanks.

I am looking for information about a Captain Sinclair who, I believe, was born in Scotland, but came to Virginia before the Revolutionary War. He was a sea captain and owned his own ship and traded with the West Indies. During the Revolutionary War, he evaded the British naval blockade of southern ports and went to Barbados, where he obtained supplies and military equipment. He brought these items back to Virginia and gave them to General George Washington and the Continental Army. Thank you very much for your kind assistance with my research. Sincerely, Susan M. Sinclair Green Grady Virginia Commissioner Clan Sinclair Associatin, U.S.A.

I attempted to confirm some of your information and found the normal conflicts. Alexander Green was very prominant in the records. In the death records, he had a son, Alexander W. Green, Jr. to die at age four in 1881. The 1880 census indicated he had a son William about that age. This suggest the name was Alexander William Green, but he is named Alexander H. Green in other places. Also, the marriage record gives his wife as Emily Kemp, and in the 1870 cenus she is listed as Emily Kemp living with mother Minny Kemp. You have probably all ready considered these differences, but just in case you missed them, I hope this may help you to know the truth.

My mother's maiden name is Alice Green. She was born in Gloucester. Her ancestors were Daniel Louis Green and wife Thelma Delores Whiting (parents); Major Fields Green and wife Charlotte Richardson (p. grandparents); Jesse Grant Whiting and Ruby Pearline Cook(e) (m. grandparents); Alexander H. To my knowledge all were born in Gloucester--in the Signpine/Woods Cross Roads area. That's regarding the Green side. Now...you must have married a Waller. My father is James Freddie Waller, Sr. He was born in Glenns, the upper side of Gloucester. His father was Rev. Stephen S. Waller and his mother is Mary Braxton (still living) who was born in Middlesex. I can go back as far as William Robert Waller, II - born in King & Queen (1836). And farther back to the 1700s to the Keys of Middlesex. But anyway, we need to talk......My dad and mom know the Drivers of Gloucester. I believe they are descendants of Indians (like us.....that's another story). Please....we need to talk!!! E-mail me!!

Surnames: Stubbs Baytop Porteus Field Wood Monsell West Lorraine James Bell Harris Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hAC.2ACE/996.1 Message Board Post: Dear Brinda, Just found your message on the Gloucester message board. We bought the Cappahosic House (Baytop House, Cappahosic Ferry House) in 1999 and have spent many hours trying to get as much information about it's history as possible. Here in a nut shell are the facts so far. The main portion of Cappahosic House (built circa 1712 by John Stubbs) is in much the same condition as when it was built. The clapboard addition was added in 1987 replacing an earlier Victorian addition. There is oral tradition from the Porteus family / Bailey family (Frank Bailey, Kinsale, Va) that the Cappahosic House was designed by Robert Porteus (1679-1758). Robert Porteus built Violet Banks (or Violet Bank) it's sister house on the Purton Bay well before immigrating back to England in 1720. Ed Chappell (Senior Architectural Historian for Colonial Williamsburg) has noted that the Cappahosic House is at least 90% intact. The state of preservation of Cappahosic House is remarkable considering it's age. Cappahosic House apparently served as the Cappahosic Ferry House from the mid 18th to the mid 19th century. The plaque near the front door was the very first historical marker placement for the "Colonial Dames 17th Century" Society - placed 1951. The Colonial Dames are not associated with the property in any way other than marker placement. We expect to have Virginia and National Historic Registry designation this coming year - the application will be made in September 2002. ----------------------------------------------------------- Abbreviated Time Line for Cappahosic House: 1652 First Land Patent by John Stubbs of England 1702 John Stubbs patents Cappahosic tract on the York River c.1712 John Stubbs builds Cappahosic House and wharf. 1719 John Stubbs dies - Ownership of Cappahosic House devolves onto his son Capt. John Stubbs c. 1750 Presumed: Capt. John Stubbs are no longer living in Cappahosic House, which is just inside the western border of Abingdon Parish, and move a few hundred yards across the border to Valley Front in Petsworth Parish (evidence 1. Capt. John Stubbs? children?s births are all listed in the Abingdon Parish records but Capt. John Stubbs is listed from approx 1748 onward as being on the Petsworth Parish Vestry; 2. In Capt. John Stubbs? will dated 7/29/1756 he leaves to John his son ?all my stock of cattle and hogs I left in Abingdon Parish, when I moved?. ) At this point or earlier it is believed the Cappahosic House became the Cappahosic Ferry House. 1759 Capt. John Stubbs dies - Ownership of Cappahosic House devolves onto John Stubbs, Jr. 1764 George Washington leaves Williamsburg and crosses ferry at Cappahosic with his servants. In his cash accounts he shows paying January 22 - 2 shillings, 6 pence for the ferry; January 22 ? 3 shillings, 9 pence for ?Club at Capahk?; January 27 - 5 shillings for ?Dinner at Capahosick? 1773 John Stubbs, Jr. dies - Ownership of Cappahosic House devolves onto John Segar Stubbs 1786 John Segar Stubbs sells Cappahosic to Capt. Stephen Field (Field also purchases "Concord" = "Mulberry Hall" - the Stubbs land adjoining the Cappahosic Tract to the East). 1798 Stephen Field dies at Cappahosic House, Gloucester Co. Capt. Thomas Baytop, Executor of Will 1820 Anne Buckner Booth Field dies - the ownership shifts to Matthew Wood (minister?, York Co.?) 1833 Matthew Wood Est. divided - Ann Wilkins (widow of Matthew Wood) then owns the Cappahosic House with the Cappahosic tract reduced to 40 acres of land. c.1840 Ownership to Anne Hibble 1852 Jefferson Stubbs purchases Cappahosic House ? 1857 Deed of trust: Jefferson W. Stubbs - tract of 40 acres, on ?which stands the brick house known as the Old Cappahosic Ferry House lately owned by Ann Hibble, dec?d? Jefferson W. & Ann W Stubbs to James C. Baytop (Trustee for Sarah A. Baytop widow of Thomas C. Baytop) 1876 Baytop defaults on loan to Gloucester Charity School ($700.00) - 3 5/8 acres and Cappahosic House used as collateral. 1888 Deed to Capt. Sidney Monsell. Substitute trustee advertised and auction at Gloucester Court House 10/1887. Bought in by Gloucester Charity School for $550.00. The Charity School spent $270.00 in repairs and arranges sale to Sidney Monsell (formerly of Baltimore) for $950.00. Wm. W. Jones was substitute trustee and Jefferson W. Stubbs was president of the Gloucester Charity School. 1933 Sidney Monsell (dec?d ~1928), survivor - Amelia Elizabeth Monsell (dec?d ~1933) - by will to Ella Metcalf (Amelia Monsell?s sister) 1934 to William V. 3. This email was passed on to me recently. Even though it concerns California researchers, it bears watching as it could set a precedent for other states to follow suit!! There is an email address at the bottom if you care to follow development of this bill. California Senate Bill 1614 Threatens To Close Genealogy Records > >California Senate Bill 1614 is a threat to all genealogists. >First, it threatens anyone researching California families since >this bill, if passed, will reduce access to California records. >Secondly, it threatens all genealogists as this could become a >precedent, encouraging other states to similarly restrict access >to birth and death records. > >The passage of California Senate Bill 1614 will close the indexes >to both birth and death records. These indexes will then be >replaced by a "non comprehensive index" that can only be viewed at >the California Department of Health Services and/or in individual >county recorders offices. No indexes would be available online, on >CD-ROM or in print in any other place. > >The legislative do-gooders have proposed this obnoxious >legislation as a method of preventing identity theft. However, >neither the California State Department of Health Services nor any >of the county clerks have ever found any incidents where present >identity thefts could be linked to either the sale of birth or >death certificates or to these indexes. In other words, this piece >of legislation is being proposed because someone thinks that there >might be a future problem, not because of any recognized past or >present issue. The impact to genealogists, however, will be felt >immediately if this proposed legislation becomes law. > >Senate Bill 1614, "Closure of the Birth and Death Records >Indexes," passed the California Judiciary Committee on May 7, >2002. It had a rather silly amendment tacked onto it, requiring >that people who have already purchased the public domain indexes >in the past to now keep the information within the indexes >confidential. This retroactive prohibition of previously produced >public domain data seems a bit far-fetched to me. > >Senate Bill 1614 will next be heard in the Appropriations >Committee. If it is passed in the Appropriations Committee, it >will then go to the Floor of the Senate for a vote. If it passes >there, it will go to the State Assembly. Two rules committees in >the Assembly must also hear it. Because of the nature of the bill, >it should be referred to the Judiciary and then to the >Appropriations Committees, in that order. > >You can follow the developments of this bill on the California >State Genealogical Alliance Web site at: >http://www.csga.com/legislative_watch.htm.
