Believed born in Smithfield, Virginia on 14 Mar 1755. John was a very colorful citizen and figured in much of the early and vital history of his locality. Being a ship Captain and sailing his own vessels, he traded regularly on the Atlantic Coast in particular the West Indies, also England and France. John lived at "Berry Hill," southwest of Smithfield, Virginia, until he acquired the house now known as 335 S. Church Street, Smithfield, Virginia, from Andrew Mackie in 1778. John and family lived at this address for several years. His wife, Elizabeth died and he shortly thereafter married his second wife, Mary Mackie Ianson, daughter of Andrew Mackie, from whom he purfchased the house in 1778. John and Mary, his second wife continued to live at Church street. It is thought he built the house at "Lands End" and lived there until his death in 1820. John was a member of the Episcopal Church. Sea Captain, farmer and merchant trader. He completed h! is active live at "Lands End," Gloucester cou., Virginia in 1820 and is believed buried at "Sherwood" cemetery nearby. Captain John Sinclair of Virginia, pirate, a patriot, or a tyrannical crank? Is said to have had several occupations in his career. Among these he is remembered as shipowner, merchant ship captain, privateer, privateer agent, ship chandler, naval officer, farmer and landholding entrepreneur. In these roles he has been judged: enterprising leader, patriot, opportunist, charlatan and anarchist. Perhaps he was all of these. Miostly his activities involved the sea, and at the center of all his endeavors was privateering. This was as much because of his seafaring background as from the demands of the times. Captain John Sinclair was active during the Revolution as a privateer who served America during dangerous wartime trade with the Caribbean. There is so much more that can be written of him, but as time and space does not permit I will stop there. He lead a very colorful life and much more information is available on him and his life if needed, let me know. Thank you for your interest in Capt. Sinclair. Pat Scherzinger

He appears in the 1830 and 1840 Gloucester Census. He was the father of John William Robins (1822-1865) who died in Elmira, NY, as a war prisoner. His first wife was probably from the Enos family, from whom he acquired his land according of land tax records. His second wife was Sarah Blassingham, the widow of Jeremiah Burke of Mathews County. Widow Sarah Robins appears in the 1850 Gloucester census with her daughter Ann Maria Robins, b. 1842, and her two sons, William D. Burke and Jefferson Franklin Burke. They lived near Money Post Office, adjacent to present-day Gloucester airport, golf course, and first Walmart. The descendants of Francis Robins include many prominant and proud Gloucester citizens of the past and present. Roane Hunt

But I can copy some of the books and send to you if you want to give me your address. I did get a copy of Capt. John Sinclair of Virginia mariner and memorable early American by C. O. Lanciano Jr. , 7823 Sunset Drive, Hayes, Virginia 23072 Phone # 804-642-7530. The other book is The Sinclair Family of Virginia Descendants of henry Sinclair Born in Aberdeen, Scotland by Jefferson Sinclair Selden, Jr. I bought the book many years ago, I think about 1968 and don't have his address, although he may still be living and is in Virginia. You might be able to find him by looking in the white pages on the internet. Worth a try anyway. As both books are copyright don't know if I can copy them or not without permission. Hope this helps you. You may also be able to get a copy of the last book from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, as they have a copy there in the library. It may be photocopied and you can order the microfilm from any Family History Center. Look under LDS.org I think and see if you can order it. There is lots of information there and also worth a try. Let me know how things turn out. Pat Scherzinger

Wiatt in March 1821. I have her mother to be Hannah Montague. I am curious about the Campbell name origin. Dr. Wiatt and Louisa were associated with Ebenezer Baptist Church of Gloucester. It began as a Campbellite Church started by Peter Ainsley I. A John Stubbs followed as the second pastor about 1830. Philip Taliaferro, Gloucester Commissioner of Revenue and a Campbellite, was the third pastor. They were called Reformed Baptist and Disciples of Christ before Ebenezer became a normal Baptist church. The early Ebenezer Church was associated with Alexander Campbell. This is Bapist history that is generally covered over. Was Hannah a Campbell or was Louisa named for an important church movement?
