Thank you Phyllis. I appreciate the help. Now I have some place to go. This is much better than having no record of them at all. Sabrina, Do you know anything about George BAILEY, his parents and ancestors? Notes for GEORGE BAILEY: George Bailey moved to Monroe Co, VA, married there and later moved to IN in 1825 or 1826, settled in Hancock Co. Had family "in the West." From the "Western Christian Advocate," 14 Jun 1848, Vol 15, #40. Quoted in "Abstracts of Obituaries in the Western Christian Advocate 1834-1850," by the Indiana Historical Society, 1988. "Early Landowners of Hancock Co, IN," by Maurice Holmes, Oct 1974, Part 1, Original Purchasers from USA: George Bailey, page 2, 18 Jul 1826. "Feb 24, George Baily, in Hancock Co, IA. He was born in Shenandoah Co, VA, in 1773. His parents emigrated to Monroe Co, VA. Here he was married to Miss Isabel Christy in 1797, and with his consort joined the Church under the ministry of James Watts; about which time it supposed he embraced religion. He subsequently emigrated to Indiana; and in 1825 or 1826 settled in the place above-named. So far as we have been able to learn, he was a faithful and consistent member of the Church. He was mild and cheerful in his temper, and agreeable in his domestic relations. The evening before he was taken sick, he prayed with more than ordinary fervor: first for the class; then for his family; then especially for the members of the family far in the west. And then prayed if it were the will of God, to remove him to himself where he might praise him better. His friends and relatives conversed with him about his departure; and he certified them that he was ready for his change. His end was peace, and his hope immortal life. Weep not, then, bereaved ones; but prepare to meet him in heaven. Amen. Lealdas Forses" >From the Western Christian Advocate, Vol 15, p 40, 14 Jun 1848. The Western Christian Advocate was a Methodist newspaper. Bailey is usually spelled Bayley on Georges early records. there is a James and John Bayley shown on Greenbriar Co., Va.(WV). delinquent tax roll for 1788 one of them may be George's father or other relation? on the 1782 Greenbriar Co. tax list there is a John Bailey with 2 horses and 6 cattle and no slaves . There is also a James Christy listed with 3 horses and 5 cattle George Bayley appears on the 1796 Greenbriar County Tax list Thanks, Bill Hobbs

Sabrina, There is a Jesse A. Perkins born Feb. 27, 1860. He shows on the 1880 census: 1465 Perkins, James, 55 Lucy J. 40 wife Jesse A. 20 S. I. 18 dau G. W. 15 son Charles 13 Ezekiel 12 R. D. 6 dau. Obrien, B. W. 30 farm work There is a reference to Samuel Lawson in the Henry Cecil Rice article: Henry Rice married again on December 21, 1936 to Bertha Lawson, the daughter of Samuel and Drucilla Lawson. Henry and Bertha raised a family of seven children. Couldn't find a Sam Lawson on the 1880 Giles Census in the 2nd Vol of Giles County, Virginia History-Families. Phyllis
Sabrina, I couldn't find Sam Lawson in the 1880 census. I did find two Jesse Perkins, but I don't think either is the one you are looking for. In the 1860 census, there is a Jesse Perkins, 13 years old, living in the household of James Johnston. In the 1870 census, I found James Perkins, 46 & his wife Lucy, 40. They had 9 children; one was Jesse, 10. They were also in the 1880 census. James, 55 & Lucy, 40 (boy, would I like to know her secret for not aging!!!). At this time, they had 6 children at home, one was Jesse, 20. This info is from the census records recorded in the "Giles County, Virginia History - Families," Vol 2. Good luck in your search, Pam Kerschner
Does anyone know where I might find someone willing to do a 1880 Giles County Census Look-up? I have two "lost" individuals: 1. Jess (Jesse) Perkins, born abt.1878 in Giles County, VA and 2. Sam Lawson, born abt. 1878 in Narrows, Giles County, VA and the 1880 Census might help me locate them. Thanks a bunch. The first was published in 1982 by the Research Committee of the Giles Co. Hist. Society; the second in 1994 by the Giles Research Group. If my memory serves me, they are in the $50.00 - $52.00 range and well worth the money. I have spend many hours extracting information from them. There is an address in the front of the second book Giles Research Group, Box 63, Ripplemead, VA 24150. I am forwarding our messages to the VAGILES-L mail list so that others can supply additional, more current information about how you order the books. Happy hunting, Pam Kerschner

Your Harlesses are annotated in this book in several places...for example: Page 162 Household # 565 $-/$150 John H. Fillinger 37 Blacksmith Va. Cara >> Cara, Can we assume that Mary Harless was previously married? John H. Filinger would have been 15 at Cartha's birth and they were married in 1848. Thanks. Very interesting addition to the puzzle. More answers lead to more questions. George B. Williams
Richard, I think you may be right. I'll list this with Jemima and John's section Thank you Sally
Vanessa, Yes, the 6-CD set of the 1850 Virginia census is from Family Tree Maker. It is CD# 309 and the cost was $49.99. I do not have 1860 or 1870, but the 1870 Giles County census is in the "Giles County, Virginia History-Families" Vol. 2. I would be willing to do lookups in there for you, if you do not have this book. Please let me know if I can do that for you. Pam
