    1. Re: [VAMONTGO-L] Thomas Marshall and Mary Abbott
    2. David
    3. I've received the following which would support that Thomas Marshall Sr. married Mary Abbott. Furthermore, it exposes a new son of Thomas, William. Thomas testified 22 Aug 1815 Lee County that he and William Abbott he had witnessed the marriage of his son William to Sally ____ (probably Abbott) in July 1811. This places Thomas's death sometime after 1815 but before 1851 at which time Thomas' widow Mary relinquished her rights to his estate to Thomas Jr. Inasmuch as he still held land in Lee County up until his death, it seems reasonable to assume he died in VA. William Marshall b. bef. 1790 probably Giles Co. VA. Private in Capt. Jeremiah H. Neill's Company, Lee Co. Militia. Died 29 Oct 1814 of sickness during military service at Norfolk, VA. Married to Sally ?Abbott, July 1811 at Lee Co., VA. Marriage witnessed by Thomas Marshall and William Abbott. Children of William and Sally: 1) Betsy/Betty Marshall born 15 August 1812 at Lee Co., VA 2) William Marshall born 1 December 1814 at Lee Co., VA Thomas Sr. definitely had a son William (listed 24 July 1804 as a child of Thomas Marshall in Lee Co., Deed Book I, p. 295.). As one of youngest sons of Thomas Sr. he would seem to have been about the right age to be the above William. Here to fore, In the context I'd assumed that this was the 2nd wife of Thomas Marshall b. 1752 in Westmoreland Co who married Sallie Johnston b. 1752 d. 1790 in Culpeper, Va. However, I'm now believing that this was Thomas and Sallie's son Thomas. 3. Check this out . . . James CLARK b. 1704, VA, m. Abt 1726, Elizabeth SUMMERS b. Abt 1706, Probably VA, d. 1781, VA. James died 1778, VA. Spouse Notes: the name of Clark means a learned person- that is, one who could read and write, which was a rare accomplishment in the olden times. As a surname, Clark and Clarke appears frequently, from LeClere; and medieval bearers of the name were very proud of it. The name took several compounds which are: Beauclark - the good Clark; Mauclerk - the bad Clark; Kenclerk- the knowing Clark; and Petyclerk - the little Clark. the name of Clark, in its various forms, is one of great antiquity, having probably been used in Great Britain as early as the eleventh century. Since the name implied literacy, its use as a name was eagerly coveted; hence it frequent use. Many people added "le clerk's to their names. The "let' was finally dropped, and only Clerk was left or, as it was pronounced, Clark. The final "e" is an addition in later times. In the fifty years following the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth and the English in Virginia, many persons of the name of Clark left England for the New World. Some of them, like Richard Clarke, who was a passenger on the Mayflower, left no children, but it was the good fortune of others to found families who have been active in the early New England settlements and the Virginia pioneers who so bravely established homes in the wilderness. There is a very strong tradition which says that our paternal ancestor who came to this country, emigrated from England to Virginia, and that his name was John. He came from the County of Kent, England and settled at Jamestown between 1630 and 1635. tradition is that he settled on the James River and became a planter; that either on the vessel coming over, or soon thereafter, he met, and fell in love with a Scotch girl, Hannah Wiatt, who became his wife. John died in Jamestown c. 1645. The pioneer ancestor of the Monroe County, (West) Virginia line was James Clark of Augusta County, who according to tradition, was the son of John Clark, third in descent from John Clark the immigrant . James CLARK James Clark settled in Augusta County, Virginia in 1740. He was one of William Beverley's land agehis name frequently appears in the records of the county. He owned a large plantation (800) acres some nine miles southwest of Staunton, near the old Glebe Cemetery, and in th area of the old North Mountain Meeting House. The land is called "James Clark's Old Plantation" in the Augusta County Courthouse records. The old home was demolished c. 1928. Records show that James was a member of Captain John Willison's Virginia Militia of 1742; and that he also served his country in the French and Indian War in 1758. (Hening, Volume 7, Augusta County Section). James married Elizabeth Summers, who died in 1781. James died in 1778; his will dated 20 Aug, 1774; proved 17 Mar 1778 is recorded in Augusta County Will Book 6, Page 4, at the Courthouse in Staunton, Virginia. All the children are listed in Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia 1745-1800, Vol. III, p.150 Will Book No. VI (p. 4), by Lyman Chalkley Vol. III, Genealogical Publication, Baltimore, Md. 3. Gary, Sorry to just now be getting back to you with this information. Time never went by this fast when I was a child! ;-) Last summer I acquired a copy of a 551 page book titled "Collins Family History Book, Virginia-Pennsylvania," by Judith Collins Welsh. When I last spoke to her in September/October, Judy's address was: 914 W. Charles Street, Coatesville, PA 19320. I will quote from Judy's book: Page 331, titled "Kelley/Kelly." "Early records show James O'Kelley born in Ireland. He came to the United States in the mid 1700's and settled in Pennsylvania. At this time he dropped the O from his name and then became known as Kelley. Records are vague concerning his wife's maiden name but it appears to have been Dow. They had 6 children who grew to adulthood." Please note that although 6 children are indicated the only son discussed here was "Jessee B. Kelley...the youngest and he was born in Pennsylvania in 1784. He married Lucy (Lucinda) Tillett on May 18, 1812 and they moved to Giles County, Virginia. On Page 332, Judy goes onto say, "I am not sure who wrote the above notes but I found the notes with the Kelly information I received." Page 334, "The following is a list of forefathers before Jessee Kelly/Kelley: Lawrence Kelley John Patrick Kelley Jonathan Kelley, 1760-1830 Sons of Jonathan Kelley: Pleasant C. Kelley - son - Pleasant, 1780-1851; John Kelley; Jesse Kelley 1784-1859; and Matthias Kelley" "Information on the Kelleys has been researched by Reverend Raymond Sidney Kelley of Eggleston, Virginia, great, great, grandson of Pleasant C. Kelley. A large majority of information on the Kelly family was given to (Judy) by Ez Ballard, Orlando, Florida, grandson of Sylvester Lafon at the July 17, 1993 Collins Reunion in Pembroke, VA." I would encourage you to contact Rev. Raymond S. Kelley. I know he is still alive because he officiated at my Great Aunt Roba Collins Day's funeral on January 10, 1999 in Pembroke. Let me know how you progress. Cara
