Rick, I believe that the 'old man' was John Lybrook. He died in December 1837,on 26 Dec 1837, the Giles Co. court ordered his estate appraised and it was probably sold in January. The way I read the letter, it seems the Lybrooks did not like Joseph Atkins. Apparently Betsy and Sally lived in their father's house for a while, he must have been hard to get along with (when he went drinking with Col. Snidow?). (They lived a dreadful life before and after his death). Joseph Atkins asked Betsy to marry him, she got all her wedding garments ready and then he changed his mind. After the sale of John Lybrook's estate, Sally moved in with her brother and Betsy moved to her sister Evalina, who was married to Josiah Lumpkins. Joseph Atkins visited Betsy there and they were married at her sister and brother-in-law's house. The Atkins' had a big party, but the Lybrooks were not invited. Do you have more info on Betsy and Joseph Atkins? Elke > My question is whether or not "Betsey" could be Elizabeth Lybrook, whom > I show as having married Joseph A. Atkins. Betsy is a form of Elizabeth any way one looks at it
Here is something for all of us to remember, children may not be in wills for many reason, I am sure this is a common one... >> you want to know why Nancy was not mentioned in the will, I suppose that the old man thought she had got enough, when she left him, she took with her the black boy they called Sampson, and the little gray mare, besides other things, if the boy had a been there at the sale I believe he would sold for as much as Jim and Jim sold for upwards of $900 and I am told that Sleeth [Sluth?] was only to pay back $140 or 50 dollars--which make her ahead of any of the children yet, <<

Hello My name is Brenda Cumbee. I got your message off the Giles Mail Subscription. I was just wondering if you have anything linking my Grandmother with your ggggrandfather. Her name was Mary Margaret Johnston before she married Issac Edward Conley. I have no information on her Parents. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, May 28, 1999 4:20 PM Subject: Re: 1860 Giles County, Virginia Annotated Census >Hi, Pam. > >I've checked Giles Co. census in 1860 for my ggggrandfather James A. >Johnston, but maybe he's in your list. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------D8EDF9762C83C5FB380F15DB Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello, everyone! I am new to this mailing list so please let me introduce myself. My name is Rick Hunter. I'm a direct descendant of the Hunters of Giles County - specifically, John Hunter (b. Abt 1718, d. 1774, m. Frances Mortimer b. Abt 1720) through their son, Robert. I would also like to thank you, Melissa, for providing what I believe to be additional info on the Lybrook side of my family. One of the letters - 23 March 1838, Philip Lybrook to Henley C. Lybrook - makes reference to the impending wedding of "Betsey" to Joseph Atkins. My question is whether or not "Betsey" could be Elizabeth Lybrook, whom I show as having married Joseph A. Atkins. The date I show Elizabeth and Joseph getting married is 2 Mar 1838, which approximately corresponds to Philip's mention of "last tuesday two weeks they was married at Lumpkins." If I read the letter correctly, it appears as though "Betsey" might have been out of favor with her brother, Philip, over some advice. And because she was "insulted", she did not invite the Lybrooks to her wedding to Joseph Atkins. I'm having a hard time understanding the letter fully - who "spent considerable time dressing Betsey"? Who was "the old man" who died? I would appreciate any help in deciphering the true meaning of this letter as regards to "Betsey" and her wedding. Also, any information you might have about the HUNTERS of Giles County - in particular, I'm trying to find when they came to America - I would be glad to share what information I have. Thanks, Rick Hunter [email protected] > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Melissa Smith Kennedy <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Friday, May 28, 1999 8:52 PM > Subject: Re: Chapman > > > Sandy & Others-- > > > > There are some Chapmans mentioned in a couple of the Lybrook > > Family Letters at Alderman Library at the University of > > Virginia. Good morning, I wish to thank all of you for the opportunity to do some CSA lookups this past week. However, some of my descendants are coming to visit, and we shall spend some time at the graves of some of our ancestors. And, the library book is due back Tuesday. So, as of 4:45 am EDT on Saturday, I cannot do any more lookups from The Giles, Allegheny and Jackson Artillery by Keith Bohannon. Have a nice weekend, and take a moment to think about those ancestors who fought and died in all the wars we fought. Best wishes, Bill Hobbs
