    3. Hi Kay, the historical society is basically open on Wed. from noon to five, but Rebecca, the worker there, is usually there on Thursday and Friday as well. The sign by the drive way is kind of misleading as it shows Sat and Sun. hours but that is for the museum. When go in give Rebecca my regards. We are planning to head back down that way in late August. We are selling the house to my mom, buying an RV and leaving for the winter months, or may be longer don't know yet. The historical society has a lot of info and people there are very helpful. Note of interest someone stole their book of the 1860 census by Charlie Davis. They were going to get permission to either copy the one at the Pearisburg Library or obtain another copy. The Library had two copies but someone stole one of theirs. Now you have to ask at the front desk to look through the book. Have a great trip. 3. If it is Giles Co. that you are looking toward try the Giles County Historical Society. Right next to the Andrew Johnston house on the main drag of Pearisburg. 3. The 1850 Monroe County (West) Virginia census is now available on line in a searchable and soundex indexed form. This has been one of our largest projects to date, containing the complete census records on 9,135 residents of the county. Access is available by subscription, check http://www.rootsource.com/inventory.htm for a complete listing of all surnames in the county. Available at no charge is the 1704 Quit Rent covering most of Virginia's Northern Neck. It is also in a searchable and soundex indexed format. Visit at http://www.rootsource.com/quit_rents.htm If you have ancestors who served in the Continental Army check http://www.rootsource.com/continental.htm for the only site that cross references army regiments to recruiting territories in addition to providing a brief regimental history.

    1. Who was our first Lucas ancestor in America?
    2. This is submitted for your opinions. Has anyone researching the Lucas family of Giles Co., VA been able to go back before Charles Lucas (b. abt. 1722, md Kathleen Kaywood)? When I began looking for my Lucas ancestors, I found some family information done by another reseacher (WFT Vol 7) which stated James Lucas b. in England in 1665 and md. Elinor ??. It listed 6 children, namely Elizabeth, James Jr., John, Ann, Edward, and Richard. John was the only one with further records which stated he was born June 10, 1692 in VA and md an unknown woman. Four children were listed for John: William, John Jr., Charles, and Forrester. Again only one child had further information and that was Charles who was listed as the husband of Kathleen Kaywood. The records go on through Charles and his descendents. *********************************************** To back up the the children by James and Elinor I have found this listing for the Charles Parish Records, York Co., VA 1648-1789 (found on Ancestry.com). Lucas Ann, dau. of James by Elinor, b. Aug. 2, 1697 Lucas Edward, (twin with Richard), son of James by Elinor, b. Jan. 26, 1700 Lucas Elizabeth, (twin with John), dau. of James by Elinor, b. June 10, 1692 Lucas James, son of James by Elinor, b. April 17, 1689 Lucas John, (twin with Elizabeth), son of James by Elinor, b. June 10, 1692 Lucas Richard, (twin with Edward), son of James by Elinor, b. Jan. 26, 1700 Three other Lucas listings that came up were: Lucas Edward, d. Feb. 11, 1700 Lucas James, d. April 5, 1705 Lucas Thomas, d. Feb. 27, 1703 At this point I don't have any clues if the Edward and James with death dates could be the same children listed above or the father. No idea on Thomas either. *************************************************** As for John and his four children, I remember reading that information in a book or online someplace. I will have to look through my notes and when I find the info again I will post that as well. ************************************************* Now, in a book with Lucas history which was written by another researcher, I found this: "Our first Lucas ancestor in America seems to be William Lucas of Saltashe Co., Cornwall England. A merchant in 1628 recorded as owner of the ship "Supply", which sailed to VA in Jan. 1625/26 (VA Mag. Vol. 15, page 318). On Aug. 16, 1644 provision was made by VA Council for Wm. Lucas and his family (minutes of the council, page 502) and Wm. Lucas was granted 800 acres in the Lower Norfolk Co., VA Aug. 22, 1647. William having married the relict (widow) of Caesar Huggett. Anyhow, I'd love to hear some opinions as to whether or not any of the information might be accurate in the connection with Charles. Unfortunately I live in NV and we have a very small LDS library here that seems to carry very little about the areas I need to do research in so I've had to depend on the online resources and mailing lists for most of my information. If anyone can add anything to the above info, please do. I'm keeping notes on both. Who knows, maybe they will eventually connect:) Hope to hear from you soon. Lora

He came out of Montgomery, Franklin Counties and went where?????? Thank you, or anyone else, for any help you can provide. Ida Mae

    3. I have to agree with Richard, Jeffs' websit is outstanding so make sure you check it out. There was a lot of work put into it. Jeff Weaver's websit: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nrv.htm has a wealth of other information on other counties and time periods.
