I found the book last week on the Internet and didn't mark it thinking I would remember where it was and I tried last night to find it and couldn't find it. Our library had a copy until someone walked off with it. It has a lot of information about the Johnston's, it covers all the counties that make up the New River area and I was going to copy some of the pages and now our library only has a microfilm copy of it. The index is incomplete. I found a lot of names in it that weren't in the index. So I want to get a copy too. If I remember right the cost was somewhere in the 30 dollar range. If I found it again I'll put it on the list so everyone will know. Bobby in verrrry hot OK.

    1. Re: Caldwell-Fry-Johnston-Abbott lineage clarification
    2. I have been going through some old mail and ran across yours and wanted to ask if you have seen the book "A History of MIDDLE NEW RIVER Settlements and contiguous Territory" by DAVID E. JOHNSTON? There is references to your DAVID JOHNSTON, NANNIE ABBOTT and GEORGE FRY. I know this was a long time ago but I figured if every one is a slow as I am about finding their ancestors then you are probably still working on the problem. Bobby in verrrrrry hot OK. Subj: Caldwell-Fry-Johnston-Abbott lineage clarification Date: 1/28/99 10:07:37 PM Central Standard Time From: [email protected] (eric worthington) Reply-to: [email protected] To: [email protected] Hello, I have put together the following lineal ancestry (starting with my gg grandparents) that is part or wholly within Giles County. There have been some difficulties with this as I will describe: John Ellis Martin (s/o Hudson Martin & Anna Eliza Spradlin) +Sarah Elizabeth Caldwell John Caldwell +Eliza Fry (have seen as Elizabeth Fry) George Fry (sometimes referred to as III, married 2nd Mary/Polly Clear) +Annie Johnston (also called Mary Ann Johnston) David Johnston +Nancy Ann Abbott (also called Nannie, Annie, and Ann, *married 2nd George Fry, sometimes called George I) Richard Abbott as the father of Nancy Ann. The problem is the use of Annie, Ann, and Nannie by mother and daughter, and the fact that they both apparently married ancestors named George Fry. As soon as I got word that there were two different George Frys it made more sense. The Mercer County, WV History book 1984 has two listings under Caldwell, they contradict each other at least in part in this matter: #1 "John Caldwell...his wife Eliza (Fry) was the daughter of George Fry Jr. and Annie Johnston, daughter of David and Nannie or Annie (Abbott) Johnston." #2 "John married Eliza Fry, daughter of Annie or Nannie Abbott and George Fry, Jr." I have used the Giles Co. mailing list archives, a lookup from the Lucian Fry "Fry History" book, the Mercer Co. History book, and the page on the Johnston family linked from the Giles Co. Genweb superindex as sources. Can anyone give me a nod as to whether I have this right? I think I need to have a second opinion after trying to sort this all out, and I don't want to get the Fry/Johnston lineage wrong after all. Would also like to hear from cousins who might help add to this line. Thanks, Eric M. Worthington P.S. Sorry if I created any headaches.

    3. Sandra: The Elizabeth Blankenship b.1752 in Va. is in my line. Your spelling of her spouse's name John Moracet should read John Morriset. He is one of my early grandfathers. (There was certainly lots of phonetic spelling of surnames in Colonial Virginia.) Do you know the name(s) of their children? It is my understanding that they had only one daughter Mary before Elizabeth's early death. He married later Fannie Fore (an anglicized form of Faure) by whom he had more children. Do you have any more information on Elizabeth?
