    3. Recent email correspondence reminded me that one of the "holes" in my McKinney line is the identification of the parents of: Hamner Jenkins "Jenks" COBURN (1883-1949), md. Cleo McKinney. He was station agent for the N&W at Narrows VA in the 40s. His obituary said he had a brother L.C. Coburn, and a sister Mrs. Harry Burgess (of Chattanooga, TN) Children: Lonice Earl, George Fred, and Margaret Louise (Mrs Warren Morris) Does anyone know his parents? Regards, Freddie S. 3. Kathy, I am so glad to hear from a descendant of Thomas Lucas and Hannah Hale Lucas! I am not from their direct line, even though you would think so if you looked at the LDS Ancestral File. I know this may be confusing, but I'll try to explain below. Someone, at some time, submitted information to the Ancestral File, listing a William Lucas as being the son of Thomas Lucas and Hannah Hale. That same William Lucas is listed in the Ancestral File as being married to Esther McKim Carson. I have found in my research that there is an error either in the parent linking, or in the spouse linking, because my 3rd great grandfather, William B. Lucas, who married Esther McKim Carson was the son of Samuel Lucas and Catherine Davis. Not the son of Thomas and Hannah Hale Lucas! Have you found a son named William Lucas belonging to the Thomas Lucas family? I have no argument that Thomas and Hannah Hale Lucas may have had a son named William. In fact, I would welcome further documentation from anyone who has a source, other than the Ancestral File, which lists William's name as one of their sons. For several years I assumed that the Ancestral File information was correct, until I started contacting the submitters of the information, and asking them about their sources. I contacted 3 of the submitters of the information, and none of them had copies of any documents that they could share with me, listing William as one of the sons of Thomas Lucas. I wasn't trying to be a stickler, I was just trying to document my pedigree, and they were not able to help me. The only clue I got was that one of the submitters of the information told me that she found a book about local history, which was written sometime before the early 1970's, that supposedly had info. in it on several generations of the Lucas family. She said that the local history book stated that Thomas Lucas had a son named William. Evidently part of the title of the book had the word "Castle" in it. She thought it might have been Fin Castle, or New Castle, or something like that. Does this "ring a bell" with anyone? I don't think it was the Briefs of Wills and Marriages of Fincastle County, because she made it sound like the information was typed in narrative form, with a few details about each Lucas family... To make a long story short, I had a break through earlier this spring, when one of my correspondents found a copy of an old letter, written in 1861 by "William Lucas" and "Esther Mc. Lucas" to William's father, Samuel Lucas. Since then, I have been able to find 3 or 4 additional sources which indicate that the William Lucas who married Esther McKim Carson was the son of Samuel Lucas and Catherine Davis. Someone needs to make a correction to the Ancestral File and get this straightened out. I am more than willing to submit a correction to the Ancestral File, but I thought that as a courtesy to those who have already submitted information on this family, that I should try and find out more information and documentation, before submitting a request for a correction to be made. Would be happy to share Family Group Records, and documentation with any who are interested in my branch of the Lucas Family. I have not typed information up regarding the lateral lines of the Lucas family, just my direct line, which follows: Charles Lucas > Captain John Lucas> Samuel Lucas>William B. Lucas >Alexander Carson Lucas > Martin Luther Lucas> Virda Ellen Lucas... Virda Lucas was my grandmother. I did find one additional clue in the IGI records of the LDS church. There is a "William T. Lucas" listed in that source, who is listed as being the son of Thomas Lucas and Hannah Hale Lucas. The 1850 census lists the middle initial of "my " William Lucas as being "B." Can you, or anyone else out there, help me find any source documents on the William T. Lucas? Or is it just an error that got started 20 or more years ago, that has never been fixed? Thanks, Lottie Hendricks Mesa, Arizona To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, July 31, 1999 4:54 PM Subject: Re: Hannah Hale Lucas >In a message dated 7/31/99 2:33:29 PM US Eastern Standard Time, >[email protected] writes: > ><< In it are Hannah Hale and Thomas > Lucas and a list of their children. 3. Hello, An ancestor of mine, Warner Pritchard b. 1800 married a woman who I have heard was Indian or part Indian. He was married previously to another woman by the name of Sophia Goens (married in 1816), whom I'm wondering might also be an Indian or Melungeon, or Mulatto. I read in Bonnie Bell's Melungeon book that people with the name of GOINS were in the counties of southwest Virginia; Giles, Lee, Russell, Scott, Washington and Wine. Has anyone heard of this name? 3. I am brand new to this list, and wonder if anyone can help me find a book that is supposed to contain some information on my family tree. I was told that there is a book about local history from the Montgomery County or Giles County area of Virginia, with a segment in it about the Lucas family. Evidently the family of Thomas Lucas and Hannah Hale Lucas is outlined, and in it there is supposed to be some reference to them having a son named William Lucas. Does this "ring a bell" for anyone? Thanks, Lottie Hendricks
