    2. Candy Parent
    3. This book may or may not be of use to some of you.... VIRGINIA Virginia Counties: Those Resulting from Virginia Legislation - Morgan P. Robinson. Virginia legislation created a total of 172 counties, but only 100 of them exist today. What is a genealogist to do? More than a valuable resource, this work explains the fascinating evolution of today's Virginia counties from the first plantations and "hundreds" which developed around the original Jamestown settlement. This handy reference volume gives reliable data in concise form concerning the dates of formation, the territory from which formed, and the origin of the names of the counties which have resulted from Virginia legislation--with references to the sources upon which these data are based and an enormous bibliography (more than 60 pages long!). The geographical section groups the counties into four divisions: Tidewater, Piedmont, Valley and Trans-Allegheny. The rather whimsically titled "genealogical" section shows how the counties all "descended" from the eight original "parent" shires and the "original county" of Northumberland. (1916) reprint, 284 pp., maps, original subject index, bibli., paper, $24.50 #R511 Pre-Publication price until 31 August 1999--$22.00 Heritage Books, Inc. 1540-E Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, MD 20716 phone: 1-800-398-7709 fax: 1-800-276-1760 email: heritagebooks@pipeline.com Visit our online catalog at http://www.heritagebooks.com International Callers: please check with your operator for the international dialing code before calling us at 301- 390-7708 or faxing us at 301-390-7153. 3. Can somebody give me a clue as to why this person wrote to ME? I have been getting quite a bit of mail lately on surnames I an mot researching, and some I have never heard of. It might have to do with the fact that I include ALL surnames in a GenConnect obit, but not sure. David dmorgan@efn.org David W. Morgan Honolulu Hawaii Archives Manager --- OKGenWeb & NMGenWeb Projects Tombstone Project -- OKGenWeb & NCGenweb Projects http://www.rootsweb.com/~okbeckha/coordinate.html ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 19:11:40 -0400 From: Debbie Robson <debbiepac@jerseycape.com> To: dmorgan@efn.org Subject: GWALTNEY FAMILY Looking for information on a John Cline Gwaltney, DOB: 12/10/1892. He is my grandfather. Never knew him - he left when my dad was two years old in 1930. My grandmother died maintaining her silence. Family medical history is unclear. When did he die? How did he die? Does dad have any living relatives. According to 1921 census, John Cline Gwaltney lived in Botetourt County, Virginia. My dad was born in 1928 in Roanoke, Virginia and John Cline Gwaltney was working for Virginia Bridge and Iron Company. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dad is 72 years old. I'd like to give him solid information. Thanks! Debbie Robson, Cape May, NJ.

    1. Re: [VAGEN-L] GWALTNEY FAMILY (fwd)
    2. David, There could be several reasons why you keep getting questions about the GWALTNEY family and others. Yes, posting many surnames in a message can generate seekers of the same surnames who are taking "shots in the dark". The Rootsweb message boards are also searchable by keywords and again, if someone thinks there might be a remote possibility that you have further information on a person or family name, then they will contact you. It's quite common practice. Steven Page

    1. Re: [VAGEN-L] [STATE-COORD-L] Proposed Bylaw Amendments
    2. You can put me on record as being opposed to both of the amendments. The reason for opposing the first is that I don't want anyone telling me I can't put my pages on xxxxxx server because there are already too many pages there. I want to be free to choose for myself. I also oppose the second amendment. It is rather confusing and appears to be trying to kill two birds with one stone. If I'm following correctly, I can understand how we would want to clearly state that "ownership" of the queries, obits and whatnot are not to revert to GenConnect (because I can't think any other example) simply because their forms or whatever were used for the input. I guess if it stood by itself, I would support that. But, since it stands on file with a statement saying that links to outside sources are "strongly discouraged" I have to oppose it. If there is a good page online that relates to my counties, I'm going to link to it, regardless of whether or not it's part of the project. So long as it is respectible and relates, why shouldn't I? Tracy
