I ran that image thru Abby FineReader, which is usually 95% error free, and it took some time, too. Once we get the images online, volunteers will probably offer to transcribe it to text so that the info will be in the search engine. Linda

    3. Great! Because I tried to make them into a text file using Xerox TextBridge for OCR. Last night, I scanned three pages of the parish register in "Picture Publisher" (came with the scanner) and saved them in .jpg format. One of them I also scanned in TextBridge, but I wasn't happy with the results. TextBridge is a top rated OCR program but the font in the book is too stylized which causes the program to miss-read the text and make garbage more than usual. It would take way too much time to proofread and correct each page. I made a sample web page from the first page of the register and it can be viewed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vanewken/stpete1.html Unfortunately the first few pages don't have much in the way of dates and the "A" are missing for the early years. Being that New Kent is a "burned county", one takes whatever one can get. I finished scanning the index of the register which was 20 pages. I've decided that I'll do 10 pages a day. There are 186 pages left to do. We are now able to upload scanned images to the USGenWeb Archives, thanks to the support of Rootsweb who provides the free unlimited space. Angela Ruley has uploaded scanned marriage bonds for Rockbridge County, and of course, we have census images for a few VA counties. So... Yes... we can put them in the Archives. :) Linda

    3. I'm no expert on copyrights, but have learned quite a bit since we started the Archives. Anyone can reprint an older book that is out of copyright, but... they cannot copyright it. They can only copyright their presentation and any additional information they add to the original. Also, licenses have to be considered, like the Broderbund census images cd's. Linda

    3. Someone contacted me regarding scanning the vestry book for St. Peter's parish and placing it on web pages. She also has the parish register as do I. She was wondering if I would be interested in placing them on the New Kent Co., VAGenWeb site. I am concerned about any copyrights on the book. She says her copies of the books were published in 1904 so the copyrights have run out. My copy of the parish register was reprinted by Clearfield Co. of Genealogical Publishing Co. though I don't see a copyright notice in the book. Can anyone tell me that if old books have been reprinted but say nothing about copyright, can they be placed on a web page? If not, how about just the index pages? Thanks, Christine New Kent Co.
