K., Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and their Descendants : a history of Frederick County, Virginia (illustrated) from its formation in 1738 to 1908, compiled mainly from original records of old Frederick County, now Hampshire, Berkeley, Shenandoah, Jefferson, Hardy, Clarke, Warren, Morgan and Federick. unknown: unknown, c1909, 614 pgs. The Cartmell book (above) contains a brief Pifer Family bio, including reference to G. Wash. Pifer raising a family at Gravel Springs. It refers to him in the present tense (1909?). Says the name was German, founded here by Henry Pifer (various spellings), his descendant John W, and then John's sons Maj. Elijah and 'Squire John Pifer from about 1830. G. Wash. was a son of Elijah. There's quite a bit more... Don't know if it has pictures or not but none show up on index.
