Hello, This is my first posting here. My ancestor is James W. Leach b. 1802 Maryland. He was raised in Salem, Columbiana Co Ohio by a foster family, and that man was Joseph Wright, who had arrived in Salem, OH about 1803 from Bedford Co VA (a Quaker man). There is no evidence that Joseph Wright was related to James W. Leach, apparently James W. Leach was orphaned or abandoned in Salem, OH as a very small boy, or a baby. There has never been any proof of his parents, but he said his mother was born in Ireland. Henry Lupton b. 1790 VA, s/o Nathan and Margaret, married Achsah Patterson b. 1795. The Lupton family were Quaker. They relocated from Crooked Run MM, of Frederick Co VA, to Salem, OH probably in the 1803 to 1810 time frame. Salem, OH was founded and settled by Quakers starting in 1803. The Quakers arrived from VA. PA, MD, NJ. James W. Leach b. 1802 MD named his first son as Thomas LUPTON Bain Leach b. 1826 Salem, OH. Henry Lupton's grand daughter Achsah Lupton married Isaiah Bain Leach, the grandson of James W. Leach, in Salem, OH. My question is this: could James W. Leach b. 1803 have been born on the way from Frederick Co VA, as they passed thru Maryland in 1802-4 time frame, on the way to Salem, OH? Could the parents of James W. Leach have been from Frederick Co VA, and either died enroute to Salem, or shortly thereafter, and then the Quaker community would have placed James W. Leach in the care of a Quaker family in Salem, OH.? I have studied this case for 5 years, and there are no records in Salem, OH which show any Leach family there, or any deaths, or any custody/probate/guradianship cases for my ancestor James W. Leach. (Salem, OH had another LEECH family, who were Quakers from PA, they arrived later than my ancestor James W. Leach, and they are not related to my ancestor) He consistantly gave his birth place as Maryland, but his death record stated Virginia. In all the census records, he left blank the question of where his father was born. There were no other Leach families in Salem, OH who were related to him. He lived in Salem, OH from his arrival, which is proved to be prior to Fall 1809, to his death in 1888. Is there anyone who knows the LEACH families in Frederick Co VA prior to 1810 time frame? I need a Leach male who was married to an Irish woman, and they must have had a baby about 1802 to 1804 time frame, possibly next door in Maryland on the route to Ohio, and they must have died enroute or shortly after, or perhaps only one died? Or he could have been born in Frederick Co VA, from 1802 to 1804 time frame, to a Leach family going to Salem, OH. I do not think that James W. Leach was simply apprenticed to Joseph Wright, due to the fact he was only between 5 to 7 years old when he was in Salem , OH in Fall of 1809. In a history book about Salem, James W. Leach was recalling the look of the town, and said he remembered seeing Salem, OH in Fall of 1809, and he was raised in Salem, OH by Joseph Wright. I have already done many years of study of the Joseph Wright family, and they were not related. Any help or suggestions are welcome. Best regards, Lilly Martin

You may already know this, but since a few years back it came as a nasty surprise to me (even after 4 yrs of Virginia History in school!), I tend to mention it just-in-case: In the time period you're working, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania were finishing up an on-going battle about their mutual boundaries. For rough purposes, in present-day terms, the southern-most row of Pennsylvania counties, through what's now Western Maryland down to the northern boundary of Frederick co VA ... any statement of locale pre-1850 was more a political issue than a geographic one. Some people actually had land patents and deeds for the same piece of property from all three jurisdictions, but if you only had a deed from Maryland you'd be fairly consistent about where you were from. (g) But, yes, one of the routes to Ohio from Frederick co would have gone out (today's) US Rte 50; another would have cut across the Northwestern turnpike toward Oldtown MD and up roughly (today's) US Rte 40. Thank you for this info. I had guessed that his birth in Maryland might be because of the borderline issue, and that his parents were likely to be found in Frederick Co VA, and either he was born on a border area, or perhaps born enroute to OH, and they only happened to pass through MD on the way WEST to Salem, OH. I have been on this case for 5 years, and I feel I have the life of James W. Leach b. 1802 very well documented, but what I totally lack is any info or reference to his parents, only clue I have is his mother was said to have been born in Ireland. So I am looking for a male LEACH who married an Irish born lady, and had a baby boy in MD in 1802 to 1804 time frame, his age is based on his many census reports.
