    3. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF 106,000 NORTHERNERS ATTACK SOUTHERNERS DECEMBER THIRTEENTH, 1862 Approximately 72,000 Confederate soldiers under command of Gene- ral Thomas J Jackson were attacked by northerners at Fredericks- burg, Virginia on Dececember 13th in 1862. They all understood a vastly outnumbered enemy faced them, and that the fighting would be devastating. 106,000 federals confronted these southerners south of the city, while other troops under General Sumner, advanced on southerners north of Fredericksburg. The men with Sumner were initially able to break through the Confederate defenses, but this result finds the federals now facing entrenched southerners along the Marye's Heights. The enemy could do little more than struggle along this base of the ridge. Casualty lists were very profound for a December engagement. The union loss amounts to 12,700 killed and wounded while the south- erners lose 5300 dead or injured. After the event, General Lee's simple comment was 'I wish these people would go away and let us alone.' FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF If anyone can add additional facts about this event, you are all encouraged to do so. Should you know of an ancestor who fought in the battle, and the unit they were in, that information would be most interesting to post. SEND ALL replies to our list. This has been posted as historical information for our list. THANKS for all your participation! Glenn
