But that is just a guess based on children - if she lost her 1st one or 2 children - it could be much earlier. But, her children come about every 2 years, no gaps, so I would start looking in the late 1860s for a marriage. ************** 1860 United States Federal Census about John H Stipe Name: John H Stipe Age in 1860: 26 Birth Year: abt 1834 Birthplace: Virginia Home in 1860: District 1, Frederick, Virginia Gender: Male Post Office: Brucetown Value of real estate: View image Household Members: Name Age John Roberts 37 -Miller Sarah W Roberts 26 Arrena B Roberts 3 Tyson Roberts 1 Catharine Roberts 38 John H Stipe 26 -Miller Looks like he was living with another Miller, perhaps learning the trade? ************** 1850 United States Federal Census about John H Stipe Name: John H Stipe Age: 16 Estimated birth year: abt 1834 Birth Place: Virginia Gender: Male Home in 1850 (City,County,State): District 12, Clarke, Virginia Household: Samuel, 44 Eliza,43 John H., 16 David, 7 Margaret, 5 James, 3 Charles, 2 Note the age gap between John & David. David was also born about 1843 - after Eliza and Samuel's marriage (1839). fairly safe to assume that all children are 1/2 siblings to John. I was hoping that children b. after John would give a clue to when his mother died. A leading cause of death for women was childbirth - so I'd begin looking about 1835-37 for a child born to Samuel and Lucy, and Lucy's possible death then. *************** 1840 United States Federal Census about Samuel Stype Name: Samuel Stype County: Clarke State: Virginia Males 5<10 = 1 30<40 = 2 Females 20<30 = 2 ***************** 1850 Samuel Stipe owned 5 slaves age 25 - male age 20 = female age 20 = male age 20 - male age 1 - female ********************** 1870 United States Federal Census about Eliza Stipe Name: Eliza Stipe Estimated birth year: abt 1812 Age in 1870: 58 Birthplace: Virginia Home in 1870: Genoa, Wayne, Iowa Family and neighbors: View Results Race: White Gender: Female Value of real estate: View image Post Office: Genoa Stipe, David, 27, b. Confederate President Jefferson Davis had passed through here by train to Danville after evacuating Richmond April 2. Farmville - Lee hoped to feed his stumbling army here on April 7, but Federal cavalry broke things up before his Confederates were fully fed. Lee crossed to the north side of the Appomattox hoping to find an unobstructed route west and buy some time from Union pursuit. Radio message. Walking tour of historic Farmville available. http://americancivilwar.com/statepic/va/va095.html On April 6, the Confederate cavalry fought stubbornly to secure the Appomattox River bridges. Confederate general Dearing was mortally wounded. http://www.historynet.com/wars_conflicts/american_civil_war/5804001.html Lee's decision to cross to the opposite side of the Appomattox was necessitated by the disasters which befell the Army of Northern Virginia on April 6. On that day, south of the Appomattox near Little Sailor's Creek, Federal forces exploited two gaps in Lee's columns and succeeded in attacking Ewell's and Lt. Gen. Richard Anderson's commands -- which constituted the center, and weakest, part of the retreating column -- from both the southwest and east. After tough initial resistance, Northern numbers overwhelmed the Confederates, and Union troops bagged large numbers of prisoners, including Generals Ewell, Custis Lee, Montgomery Corse and Joseph Kershaw. What was left of the Rebel units fled westward where the van of Lee's army, Longstreet's First Corps, had paused. ******************************* World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 about James William Stipe Name: James William Stipe City: Not Stated County: Frederick State: Virginia Birth Date: 16 Oct 1877 Race: White Roll: 1984715 DraftBoard: 0 B&O Agent Postmaster plus another I can't make out In Business for Himself in Stephenson, VA Next of Kin: Irene (?Merecee??)
