    1. [VAFREDER] 51st Regiment Virginia militia, 1812

    3. I'm trying to identify the boundaries of the 51st Regiment, Virginia militia. They were redrawn 23 November 1812 to accommodate a third regiment in addition to the 31st and 51st. The reorganization is described in the film of 51st Regiment records (LOV, Reel 114), and the boundaries of the 51st are described as follows: - Begin at Frederick County line, Manasses Gap [old form of Manassas, according to USGS; does this reference Manassas Gap in today's Warren County?] - Follow main road through Smoke Town to Mount Lion Mill and on to White post [if so, proceed almost straight north to White Post] - Follow Battletown road to intersection of road from Hamilton's little mill to Millwood [Battletown = Berryville, route is basically White Post to northwest of Millwood] - Thence "up the said road" [not a very clear reference but presumably the road from Hamilton's little mill] to the road leading from Helm's Mill [location not known] - Thence "with the said road" [i.e., Helm's Mill road] to the road from Millwood to Winchester - Thence with the Millwood road to Winchester - Thence with the line of the 31st Regiment to Hampshire County [the description of the 31st Reg. unfortunately references this same segment as following the "present boundaries" between the 31st and 51st] - Thence with the county line to the beginning. But that's nowhere near the beginning, so my reading of Manasses Gap must be way off. The description of the newly created third militia district is pretty simple and may have a clue: - Begin at corner of Jefferson-Berkeley line where Opequon crosses [very clear] - Follow line of 31st and 51st Regiments to Manasses Gap [I'm lost] - Follow county line to beginning. Can any researcher clarify any part of this description? Thanks very much! Don Zochert x-posted on Old Frederick Co. list
