Thank you for this info. I had guessed that his birth in Maryland might be because of the borderline issue, and that his parents were likely to be found in Frederick Co VA, and either he was born on a border area, or perhaps born enroute to OH, and they only happened to pass through MD on the way WEST to Salem, OH. I have been on this case for 5 years, and I feel I have the life of James W. Leach b. 1802 very well documented, but what I totally lack is any info or reference to his parents, only clue I have is his mother was said to have been born in Ireland. So I am looking for a male LEACH who married an Irish born lady, and had a baby boy in MD in 1802 to 1804 time frame, his age is based on his many census reports. Hello, This is my first posting here. My ancestor is James W. Leach b. 1802 Maryland. He was raised in Salem, Columbiana Co Ohio by a foster family, and that man was Joseph Wright, who had arrived in Salem, OH about 1803 from Bedford Co VA (a Quaker man). There is no evidence that Joseph Wright was related to James W. Leach, apparently James W. Leach was orphaned or abandoned in Salem, OH as a very small boy, or a baby. There has never been any proof of his parents, but he said his mother was born in Ireland. Henry Lupton b. 1790 VA, s/o Nathan and Margaret, married Achsah Patterson b. 1795. The Lupton family were Quaker. They relocated from Crooked Run MM, of Frederick Co VA, to Salem, OH probably in the 1803 to 1810 time frame. Salem, OH was founded and settled by Quakers starting in 1803. The Quakers arrived from VA. PA, MD, NJ. James W. Leach b. 1802 MD named his first son as Thomas LUPTON Bain Leach b. 1826 Salem, OH. Henry Lupton's grand daughter Achsah Lupton married Isaiah Bain Leach, the grandson of James W. Leach, in Salem, OH. My question is this: could James W. Leach b. 1803 have been born on the way from Frederick Co VA, as they passed thru Maryland in 1802-4 time frame, on the way to Salem, OH? Could the parents of James W. Leach have been from Frederick Co VA, and either died enroute to Salem, or shortly thereafter, and then the Quaker community would have placed James W. Leach in the care of a Quaker family in Salem, OH.? I have studied this case for 5 years, and there are no records in Salem, OH which show any Leach family there, or any deaths, or any custody/probate/guradianship cases for my ancestor James W. Leach. (Salem, OH had another LEECH family, who were Quakers from PA, they arrived later than my ancestor James W. Leach, and they are not related to my ancestor) He consistantly gave his birth place as Maryland, but his death record stated Virginia. In all the census records, he left blank the question of where his father was born. There were no other Leach families in Salem, OH who were related to him. He lived in Salem, OH from his arrival, which is proved to be prior to Fall 1809, to his death in 1888. Is there anyone who knows the LEACH families in Frederick Co VA prior to 1810 time frame? I need a Leach male who was married to an Irish woman, and they must have had a baby about 1802 to 1804 time frame, possibly next door in Maryland on the route to Ohio, and they must have died enroute or shortly after, or perhaps only one died? Or he could have been born in Frederick Co VA, from 1802 to 1804 time frame, to a Leach family going to Salem, OH. I do not think that James W. Leach was simply apprenticed to Joseph Wright, due to the fact he was only between 5 to 7 years old when he was in Salem , OH in Fall of 1809. In a history book about Salem, James W. Leach was recalling the look of the town, and said he remembered seeing Salem, OH in Fall of 1809, and he was raised in Salem, OH by Joseph Wright. I have already done many years of study of the Joseph Wright family, and they were not related. Any help or suggestions are welcome. Best regards, Lilly Martin

You may already know this, but since a few years back it came as a nasty surprise to me (even after 4 yrs of Virginia History in school!), I tend to mention it just-in-case: In the time period you're working, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania were finishing up an on-going battle about their mutual boundaries. For rough purposes, in present-day terms, the southern-most row of Pennsylvania counties, through what's now Western Maryland down to the northern boundary of Frederick co VA ... any statement of locale pre-1850 was more a political issue than a geographic one. Some people actually had land patents and deeds for the same piece of property from all three jurisdictions, but if you only had a deed from Maryland you'd be fairly consistent about where you were from. (g) But, yes, one of the routes to Ohio from Frederick co would have gone out (today's) US Rte 50; another would have cut across the Northwestern turnpike toward Oldtown MD and up roughly (today's) US Rte 40. According to a probate on George LEE in 1819-George Hensel was appointed as Executor of George Lee's estate.(Researched and shared by Thomas Hamm). Nancy was probably the oldest child of George LEE-but am not sure why her husband would have been chosen to take care of the estate, instead of one of her brothers, as they would have been of age in 1819, also. It appears that my George LEE died, while in the War of 1812, of an illness, but have not been able to find his name or death date in any records yet, or just where he may have died. Looking for anything at all connected to these Hensel and Lee families. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks so much, Dee

Although I mentioned in my previous posting, Abner Copeland was born June 15, 1790 NC., son of John and Judith (Rawson) Copeland, I Apologize for not elaborating further by saying this Copeland family moved to Clinton Co., OH., from Chatham Co., NC. about 1815. I just wasn't sure if Margaret and Abner had met and married in VA. by chance, or OH., where they eventually moved to. I have since found info of their marriage having taken place in Clinton Co., OH on April 10, 1817. Only moments ago, I received a reply from the RootsWeb {OHGREENE} Mailing List, re their marriage that was found in the Marriage Index: Selected Counties of OH 1789-1850, CD by Broderbund/Family Tree Maker's Family Archives. It lists Abner Copeland m Peggy Morgan, Clinton Co., OH 4/10/1817. I had heard she sometimes went by the name Peggy, but did not think it would be on the marriage record instead of her given name, Margaret. Unfortunately, no parents names were listed! All the info I have found of Margaret aka Peggy Morgan lists her date of birth on July 2or20, 1797 in Frederick Co., VA. I would be grateful if a birth record of her could be found, to continue her line of ancestry. Again, many thanks for the help you have already given me. Julia

The MORGAN family is found in early Frederick County, Virginia. If you could find their marriage bond, perhaps Margaret MORGAN's father's name may be on it. I checked "Frederick County Marriage Records 1772-1823" Volume 1 by Sidney Marie FEATHERS (2003) finding no listing for a marriage between Margaret MORGAN and an Abner COPELAND. I then checked "1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners" for COPELANDs in Shenandaoh, Frederick, Rockingham, Fauquier, and Loudoun Counties of Virginia only finding COPELANDs in Loudoun County, Virginia. There was Andrew COPELAND located 1 mile East of the Blue Ridge; 15 miles northwest of the county courthouse at Leesburg. James COPELAND at Short Hill; 13 miles northwest of Leesburg and another James COPELAND 1 mile south of Short Hill; 12 miles west of Leesburg. A Richard COPELAND was located 4 miles south of Short Hill; 11 miles west of Leesburg. Checking "Abstracts of Frederick County, Virginia Wills, Inventories & Accounts 1743-1816: by Dee Ann Buck (2004) that covers Will Book 1 through 9, there are no COPELANDs listed. I also checked "What I Know About Winchester" by William Greenway RUSSELL (1800-1891) where no COPELANDs were mentioned for the town. Checking Shenandoah County, Virginia Marriage Bonds 1772-1853" by the Genealogical Society of Utah there are only an Mary J. and Sarah Ann COPELIN (spelled like that) and a Isabella COPELON (spelled like that) and a Isaac and Joseph and James COPELIN/COPLIN.

Early in century or late? An actual date is even better for getting help. If you know when someone was born, or died, or something to pinpoint a family to a specific place and time, you will get more help. Any names? There are often there are multiple, sometimes unrelated families, in the same county. If there are multiple people in the same location with the same name - spouse or children's names will help. For instance, in hte 1700s, depending on background, it was common to name firstborn son after the husband's father. I have a branch that has 5 sons, all naming their firstborn after their father - making 5 cousins with exactly the same name, and approximately the same age. In fact, the brothers named their sons after their brothers - so I actually have 25 men with the same 5 names! The way to distinguish them is to know the rest of the family. Any idea on location within the county? Depending on timeframe, it helps to get an actual location and records. If you have a clue, that can help. Often you can get this type of clue from census records, cemetery records, etc. Good luck.
