Author: blpurdy1 Surnames: Wendel/Becker Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.frederick/5899/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Samuel Wendel arrived in the United States in 1747 on the ship Restauration. He settled in Winchester, Frederick County, married Margaret Becker somewhere around 1749. Samuel is listed as being one of the founding members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (now called the Grace Evangelical Church) in Winchester. We show children as Evalina, Peter Joseph, John, Mary & Samuel but think there may be more. I also believe Margaret Becker may have been related to Heinrich Becker who was another founding member of this church. I'm looking for marriage date for Samuel and Margaret, dates of birth/death, where buried, and any other information anyone may have. If you have any information about either of these lines, please contact me. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I apologize for not providing a time frame for the search. The information that you provided was very helpful and matched the Stipes that I was searching for. Yesterday I found some additional information on the Stipes which tied in very nicely with your information, but also left a couple additional questions. I found that John H. Stipe moved from the Brucetown area of Frederick County, Virginia to near Rippon in Jefferson County, West Virginia in July of 1893. I also found that John's son, Hugh Randolph Stipe was born on September 11, 1870, at Brucetown, VA; and died on October 07, 1948 at Clearbrook, VA. He married the former Miss Anna Best, daughter of Dr. William J. Best on September 29, 1896. Anna Best Stipe was born on October 23, 1872 and died on October 08, 1903. At the time of her death they had one child, a son. Hugh R. and Anna Best Stipe child's name was Hugh Randolph Stipe, Jr. He was born on December 10, 1902 and died in April of 1974. Hugh Randolph Stipe, Jr. married Frances Grant. Frances Grant Stipe was born on June16, 1907 and died in December of 1994. I don't know Francis' parent's names or if Hugh and Francis Stipe had any children. It would appear that Hugh Randolph Stipe's marriage to Anna Best was his third marriage. His first marriage was to Beatrice Carter and his second marriage was to Nellie S. ________. Wasn't able to locate the parents of his first two wives, nor the maiden name of the second wife. I think Beatrice Carter may have been an older sister to a William Glenn Carter. He lived very near Brucetown near the turn of the 20th century. I found that he was married to an Edith Speck. Edith appears to have born about 1901 and William Glenn was born about 1902. I would like to find additinal information William and Edith Carter. During my research yesterday I found another Stipe connected with Brucetown c1915, his name was Harry Stipe. At first I thought Harry might have been a nick-name for Hugh. Harry Stipe may have been a rural mail carrier c1912. It would appear from local newspaper accounts that Harry Stipe and his wife had their fourth child, a daughter born in 1915. The newborn's name was not given, nor was the mother's. In all article from that period Harry's wife is referred to as Mrs. Harry Stipe. It would also appear that all of their children at that point in time were girls. The names of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stipe's children were given as Margaret, Francis and Elizabeth. The girls names came from various Winchester newspaper items. If you could find any information that may fill in any of the blanks in the above information I would very much appricate it. Thank you once again for your generous assistance. Jerry Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Confederate general Dearing was mortally wounded. http://www.historynet.com/wars_conflicts/american_civil_war/5804001.html Lee's decision to cross to the opposite side of the Appomattox was necessitated by the disasters which befell the Army of Northern Virginia on April 6. On that day, south of the Appomattox near Little Sailor's Creek, Federal forces exploited two gaps in Lee's columns and succeeded in attacking Ewell's and Lt. Gen. Richard Anderson's commands -- which constituted the center, and weakest, part of the retreating column -- from both the southwest and east. After tough initial resistance, Northern numbers overwhelmed the Confederates, and Union troops bagged large numbers of prisoners, including Generals Ewell, Custis Lee, Montgomery Corse and Joseph Kershaw. Listed on 1860 Clarke Co. VA census: Charles 35, Elizabeth 35, Jackson 14, Charles 13, John 13, MARY 5 years. I guess his first wife Elizabeth dies in Frederick Co. VA in my home. You might want to look at that county. On 1850 Frederick Co. VA the household of Andrew Grubb 35, miller, Phoebe E. 25, Mary A.M. 7, Emily V. 4, Harvey N. 5 months, Rebecca 70 years Lalilia 30. Andrew Grubb & Phoebe Taylor married in Frederick Co. VA 7 Apr 1842. Charles Grubb & Rebecca Walters married in Frederick Co. VA 20 Jan 1809. Above Mary A. M. born c1843 and the Mary A. on 1870 Clarke born c1843. They could be two different people or the same, I can't say. If your couple had been married in Clarke Co. VA, their marriage record might not exist. Clarke Co. VA Bond run from 1836 to 1850 and the registry starts 1865 to 1890. My gr-gr-grandparents George H. Sowers & Martha VA. Sowers were married during the same time period about 1862. I have abtracted into book form marriages for Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah & Warren and I can't find a record of Russell & Grubb. You might want to check Loudoun Co. VA. Hope you will check out my cousin web site, there is a man interested in Grubb. Good luck with your research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I think you found the right household in the 1870 Clarke Co. census. I checked the 1910 Clarke Co. census and found that Mary was listed as 66 years old and was a widow. Her husband, Jesse died in 1903. She was also listed as having given birth to 13 children of which 8 were still living. Unfortunately it doesn't connect her with her parents. I guess that search will continue for now. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. On 1860 Clarke Co. VA a Jesse Russell age 21 years living with his father's household. On 1870 Clarke Co. VA were was a Mary Grubb age 18 as a teacher living with Daniel Wade's family On 1870 Clarke Co. VA were the family group of Jesse 31 years, Mary A. 27, Mary E. 6 & Emma 4. also have boarders. They really do not match the census group of Jesse & Mary with eight children. The census stated married 40 years in 1900. Good luck.
