You can order on film wills & land deeds for Frederick Co. VA. The rental of the film $3.25 for a month. Making your copies of any document from the film for a lot less that what would be charged by the courthouse. If you live in VA, or your local library as exchange of materials with State of VA library in Richmond, you can get the same film. Good luck.

Frederick County Chancery Court appointed a committee to divide the real estate of a deceased person in the mid 1840's. This was accomplished and a drawing/plat was made (and included in the court records) of the several sections awarded to several persons. I'm attempting to find out who owns the land today but cannot find, in the index of deeds, any listing or reference to those persons to whom the property was given in the division, nor is there a grantee or grantor listing of the receipants or of the deceased for this land. Suggestions as to where/how to find/trace ownership of the land will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance..........Eugene

I don't know if the house is still standing today. According to "Some Old Homes in Frederick County, Virginia" by Garland Quarles Revised edition 1999, it was standing then. p. 178-179 All info below from that book book also has photo of house "It is located on the West side of Apple Pie Ridge about a mile north of White Hall." Part of Gov. Gooch grant (250 acres) of Nov 12, 1735 to Giles Chapman. Part of a Fairfax grant (1250 acres) to Giles Chapman, (FDB 1- p. 220) Sold to James Crumley, then went to James' son Samuel Crumley, then to John Crumley as heir to both Samuel & James. (FWB 3, page 215). On Oct 4, 1793, John Crumley "of Newbury, South Carolina" conveyed parts to Robert Bull (FDB 24 B, p. 461, and to David Lupton (FDBSC2 - page 476). The will of James Crumley, proved Aug 9, 1764, indicated that the house was on it at that time (FWB 3, page 215) ***** It would seem that James Crumley had the property between sometime after the 1735 grant to Chapman, and his death in 1764. The deed book records might give you dates, but either Chapman or Crumley must have built the (or a) house on the property. It changes hands several times between generations of Lynn 1804-1847 & Lodge descendants 1847-1967, but the section ends that on Jan 27, 1967, the 200 acre farm and the old home was deeded to J. P. Darlington. (FDB 350, page 283). ***** I would doubt that it was open to the public, but I don't know. You might try finding "J. P. Darlington" and contacting them directly, explaining your interest. (Google search on name/location ("J P Darlington" winchester virginia), or check phone book records, post office addresses, city directories, tax records, etc.). I have had much success when contacting current owners of family properties - they are often interested in the home's history. Good luck.
