"Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Their Descendants, A History of Frederick County, Virginia" by T. K. Cartmell Page 103 "MORGAN AND HIS MEN" Prisoners:----------WILLIAM GREENWAY--------------------JOHN STEPHENS The traditions of Winchester have alwys mentioned the following as well-known members of the Rifle Company who started to Quebec with Capt. MORGAN, t-wit:-------------------------------------------------------Privates: GEORGE GREENWAY, WM. GREENWAY-----------------------------------------------. We also notice that MORGAN did not report the British officer the names of GEORGE GREENWAY-----------------------------------------; so we must conclude that these eight men of the remnant who escaped capture and ultimately arrived in Winchester, and were regarded by the prisoners on their return as a part of their old company: or it may be, they were confounded with enlistment in the Spring of 1777-------------------------------
"What I Know About Winchester" by William Greenway Russell Page 7 Preface to What I Know About Winchester William Greenway Russell was born in Winchester on 5 Oct 1800.---------------The Russell family was of English origin, but the progenitor of the American brand had emigrated to Holland in 1688 and settled in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania. Then there's this one, which suggests the connection: McAllister, Addams S. The Descendants of John Thomson, Pioneer Scotch Covenanter : genealogical notes on all known descendants of John Thomson, covenanter, of Scotland, Ireland and Pennsylvania, with such biographical sketches as could be obtained from availble published records, or were supplied by the friends of those individuals who were too modest to tell of their own accomplishments. Easton, Pa.: Chemical Pub. Co., printers, 1917 It says that the wife of David Russell was the daughter of Wm. and Mary (Stevens) GREENWAY who came to America from Scotland and lived at Greenway Manor, VA. [This David Russell was son of Richard Russell, who left Holland in 1732 and settled in PA.] It in turn refers the reader to "Family Records compiled for the descendants of I. W. and S. E. Russell" by J. Gray McAllister.

I think you might mean Opequeon, VA. It was the site of a Civil War battle Sept 19, 1864. Actually, I think the battle was on Opequeon Creek which is in part in West VA although maybe in VA too. There was an Opequeon Church in Kerstown, VA. In 1750 there was an Opequeon in Frederick Co., VA P.I.FOX wrote: > did you try > ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/frederick/cemeteries/ > > dlmfox aka genie guru > OUR VA ,D.C,MD,PA,NJ GENEALOGIES > http://www.geocities.com/pifox1/index.html > > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Wednesday, September 15, 2004 7:31 AM > Subject: [VAFREDER] Moon/Bowen > > > >>This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. >> >>Classification: Query >> >>Message Board URL: >> >>http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gAC.2ACE/2696 >> >>Message Board Post: >> >>I am looking for a cemetery called "Opqueon" in VA thinking Fredricks CO > > Ann(Moon)Bowen is buired there and possibly her husband Henry Bowen > >> >>==== VAFREDER Mailing List ==== >>FREDERICK COUNTY GEN-WEB SITE >> > > > > ==== VAFREDER Mailing List ==== > Address all of your Frederick County > messages to: [email protected] >

According to Virginia Colonial Militia, 1651-1776, Baltimore: Southern Book Co., under Land Bounty Cerificates, a Bartlett Goodman was a soldier in Capt. Throgmorton's co. of Rangers in 1759, till properly discharged. Louisa Co., Feb. 14, 1780. [I assume this last is the location or court and date of issuance of the land bounty certificate.] Per Binford, J. H., History of Greene and Sullivan Counties, State of Indiana : from the earliest time to the present, together with interesting biographical sketches, reminiscences, notes, etc. Chicago: Goodspeed Bros. & Co., 1884, a Bartlett Goodman came to the Greene co. area ca 1820 and located on the northern line of Stafford twp. The old Baptist Church on Black Creek was organized about 1835 and Bartlett Goodman was one of its leading members. In 1844, the donated land for the church was deeded to Bartlett and others as trustees of the church. Bartlett was also one of the early ministers of the church. There was a Bartlett Goodman in Widner, Knox Co. IN, in the 1820 census and in 1860 and 1870 there was a 20/30 yr old one in Greene Co., IN. Unlikely any of these are the same man who was fighting in the French and Indian Wars or on the frontier in VA in 1759 but possibly descendants of that one???

I know that he and Mary were married in 1808 in Frederick County, Virginia. I know that they had a son name George Washinton Curry. I know Thomas Curry was listed in the 1810 and 1820 census for Frederick County and that he wasn't there in the 1830 census. I am looking for any information on him, his children besides George and on his wife Mary. Mary had a father named George and two brothers George and Casper. What I don't know is when Thomas was born, when he died or if he had siblings. Since I do not live in Virginia and there aren't any cemetary records on line as of yet. I am hoping that there is someone out there with the information that I need. Thanks Bunches Cathy Curry

I'm thinking now that they are brothers and perhaps Joseph came to Ohio later after Samuel was settled. Its documented in a few articles that I have that Samuel moved there in 1830. Anyway, there is a will of a Joseph Sample in 1853. Here is a neat index of the Miami Ohio Valley, this is where I found this information. I don't know if this is your Joseph, but its possible! http://www.ogs.org/asp/miami.asp

You will have to search my book or the orginial records for the surnames you seek. At the moment I am working on my next Frederick Co. VA Will Book 10-19 years of 1816-1837. As I go through these originial records, if I see a woman's maiden name not posted in the marriage book I have, I will post that information. This is the only kind of information I am posting. I do not have the people you mentioned in my own family tree. I am searching: Sowers, Kerfoot, Johnston, Jinkins/Jenkins, McKay/McKoy & Mitchell. Good luck with your research.

The one I'm interested in married 1825 Frederick Co, VA to Mary BARTLETT, widow of Sanford BARTLETT ( who had been an officer in War 1812) - this Mary may well have been Mary COCHRAN, who was the widow of Abraham SHANK. I would like very much to know what happened to this Joseph SAMPLE; and when Abraham SHANK died (and if he left children, who might have been stepchildren to Sanford BARTLETT) For more on this story, please see my post at: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.frederick&m=2632 FYI: a Mary COCHRAN was dau of Robert COCHRAN b c1740 and Jane a Mary COCHRAN may have 1m a FLANNIGAN a Mary m 14 Mary 1806 Frederick Co, VA Abraham SHANK Robert COCHRAN and wife Jane sold a lot in Winchester to Mary SHANK (Frederick Co, VA Deed 21 Dec 1814) - this may indicate that Abraham SHANK was dec'd by then... After Abraham SHANK died, Mary is then reported to have married a Lieut BARTLETT (would fit Lieut Sanford BARTLETT - there probably weren't too many Lieut BARTLETTs in Winchester area just after the War 1812...) Sanford BARTLETT died 1817; Mary BARTLETT is in 1820 Frederick Co, VA census; then she marries Joseph SAMPLE. I'm not sure all these Mary's are the same - I'm trying to sort that out (any help is welcome); and to find the names of Sanford BARTLETT's children. Jim Bartlett [email protected]
