My gg grandparents lived at Green Springs. The information checks out with the children I have for Ben and Laney ( Magdline ) Jerry Keys did a lot of research on the Dix family some years ago but could not find anything past Ben Dix. I do have a copy of an 1885 map of the Green Springs area and it has on it "Ben Dix's Farm." I remember the farm very well sense my grandfather eventually inhiered from his father Samuel Elliot Dix. I spent many wonderfull times playing with my siblings and cousins there. My Grandmother baked all her own bread, rolls, cakes, and pies in her old wood stove. I have yet to find coconut cream pie to equal her's. The home was destroy in a fire in which my grandfather was badly burned and did not recover. A school bus driver pulled him out of the house. This was in the late 1950's. Again thanks so much for the help. Lois

Two books on Land Causes 1728-1825, Dix listed and Cemetery Book, Dix listed. I can not say I have seen records of families moving from that area of VA into Frederick Co. VA. I do know of families moving from Charles Co .MD into Frederick Co. VA. In any case, try to find a death record for your Benj. Dix. Good luck.

I wonder if his family was really from a neighboring county to Frederick Co. VA ? The Wright family I am studying would be the Quakers members of Hopewell & Crooked Run Meeting Houses. I do not see Dix listed in these records. There is one entry Quaker records of Black Water Meeting: Nathan Dix of NC dated a letter to meeting in VA dated 15 May 1767.

Bondsman John Fry, who signs in German. (no bond/marriage found for Elizabeth & Jonathan Cowdery in books) (it is spelled Cowdery - but you might look for phonetic equilivants - (Caudy, etc.) as that name is a bit unusual 7 the spelling is often phonetic in early records.) There are a few Cowdery names in Norfolk, VA, however that may be worth checking out. p. 271 17 Mar 1847 Samuel M. Mullin & Henrietta W. Price. Bondsman George E. Price. ("Frederick County Marriages" by Vogt & Kethley list them as Henrietta V. Price & Samuel W. Mullin, minister J P Smith) p. 274 21 Oct 1847 George E. Price & Mary Jane Beckham. Bondsman John Frame. The 1850 census lists a Samuel M. Mullin, age 35, merchant, and a Henrietta W. Mullin age 25 in the household of John Mullin, 70 in Moorefield, Hardy Co., VA. I suspect that Samuel & Henrietta are a married couple living with his father, rather than brother & sister in this census. They are in a hotel, and another family member of this household is Jno (probably John) Mullin, innkeeper. They may also simply be listed as hresidents of the hotel, not a family unit with the others?? Per "Some Old Homes" by Garland Quarles p. 61 Concerning the Clark Cather House "Location: On Merriman's Lane about a mile and half west of Winchester." House into posession of Henry Baker 1768. "In his will, proved May 29, 1807, Henry Baker devised the tract to his son Henry W. Baker. (W.W.B.1 - Page 64)" [Winchester Will Book # 1] "On April 9, 1838, Jacob Baker and the other heirs of Henry W. Baker conveyed a 240-acre tract, including the site of the house we are considering to John Price, the husband of Elizabeth Price, a daughter of Henry W. Baker (F.D.B. 71 - Page 386). On April 11, 1842, Charles W. Price and the other heirs of John Price conveyed the same tract to Elizabeth M. Price. (F.D.B.71, Page 62). Four years later, Elizabeth M. Price sold the property to Clark Cather. (F.D.B.75 - Page 126)." If this Elizabeth M. Price is the mother - it would not be unusual for her children to deed her her husbands property. Men often left their property in that time to their children, stipulating to care for their mother. If a woman inherited, and she remarried, her new husband would own the deceased husbands estate, and that mans children would/might receive nothing. "Some Worthy Lives" by Quarles, has a number of Bakers of the above family, but no details to a daughter marrying a Price. p. 12 & 13 refer to Henry Baker (1733-1808) married Maria E. FInk. Had a number of children, including Henry W. Baker (1760-1837) m. Catherine Miller Henry & Catherine had a number of children, including: Eliza M. Baker (1795-1870). This doesn't fit with a John Price marriage above of 1806 though (widow Cowdery)???? Virginia & Julia are names that repeat throughout the Baker family. "Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and their Descendants" by Cartmell p. 430-436 concern the Baker family, above, but nothing that identifies the Elizabeth Baker Price that inherited the property. The point that the heirs of John Price deed it to Elizabeth (April 1842) would fit your date of John Price dying about 1841. Your best bet would be to get the deed records & see who are the heirs mentioned in the land transfers to see if any are connected with your people. If they fit, you can look into the Baker wills, etc to see if there is mention of Elizabeth Price. The Handley Archives has quite a bit on the Baker family, and they may be able to help you if there is a connection, or possibly find a connection. http://www.hrl.lib.state.va.us/handley/about.asp?p=27 Good Luck!

You can do a Google search on the county name and a qualifier - such as: "greene county" PA archives PA is very good in having old records. They often have the originals from 1700 & before in an "archives room" - sometimes even a whole building full. It is often associated with the county clerk of courts office, but not always. Another great resource is the county historical society. They will often answer questions & do look-ups for a minimal fee or donation. Sometimes posting on that county's board with a "look-up request" will prompt someone to look up an item or two when they are going to do their own research. In Frederick Co., VA - the county courthouse in Winchester would have the recorded deed records. The Handley Archives, also in Winchester may have information as well - they have quite a bot of great info there and will do lookups in their holdings. (small fee) If you contact them, be very specific as to the person(s) you seek. Many have the same name, and it can be disappointing to receive lots of info, but on someone with the same name but unfortunately not the person you seek. If the land sale was in Greene Co - that would be the best place to look for records on a deed. There may even be platt books available, detailing the location of the land itself. Good luck!

I am looking for information on himself, his ancestors, his wife, and all of his descendants, specifically his daughters. His granddaughter, Mary SHUSTER, is my direct ancestor. Her father was Michael SHUSTER. I do not know the name of Mary’s mother, but I know Michael MYERS was her grandfather. I would like to fill in the pedigree. Any information will be helpful. I found the connection in Who’s Who on the Ohio River and Its Tributaries by Ethel Carter Leahy (Cincinnati, Ohio; E.C. Leahy Pub. Co, 1931). On page 430 the book lists Samuel Boone GOUCHER, the brother of my great-great-grandfather. It states the following: “Mr. Goucher has an unbroken line of Ohio River tradition in his immediate family from his maternal great-grandfather, Oliver Mike Myers, who floated his produce to the southern markets in the 1700s and walked back the 2,000 miles, to his father and himself in the same occupation. As late as 1870 he flat-boated produce to New Orleans, later becoming interested in the ferry boat, running from Toronto, O., to the W. Va. Shore, which was established by his grandfather, Michael Shuster, in 1830, and which he, with other heirs, is till operating. His great-grandfather was a Government scout, and died in his 107th year; his wife died in her 95th year.” I also found the following on page 239 of Ohio State History of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Greenfield, Ohio; Greenfield Print. & Pub. Co., c1928): “The Michael Myers Chapter of the D. A. R. was named in honor of Michael Myers, a pioneer resident of Knox Township and an outstanding figure during the Revolutionary period. Born at Winchester, Va. In 1745, he gave great service to the government in quelling the Indians. As an Indian scout, he patrolled the banks of the Ohio from Mingo to Yellow Creek. In the Crawford Expedition, he was Captain of Scouts and performed many deeds of great bravery, often fighting a horde of Indians single-handed. His rifle, which was called ‘Limber Jennie,’ is six feet in length and is still in possession of the Myers estate. He was an unerring shot, many an Indian having lost his life as a target for that rifle. In 1795, he located on Croxton’s Run, above Toronto, and in 1799 built a log cabin on the banks of the Ohio River. In 1800, he brought his family here on a flat boat from Pennsylvania. Later he built a stone house, the first of the kind in this locality, which was used as a hotel for forty years. He died August 11th, 1852, at the age of 107 and is buried in the Toronto Cemetery.” Further down in that chapter the following charter members are listed as direct descendants of Michael MYERS: Blanche Monsey Campbell Hannah R. The name William Hiett certainly is of interest since he bought land in 1849 from my Grays but the names that appear on the land sale in Greene Co. are William and Washington Gray with Nancy widow of John. (Also Williams wife Mary) These folks signed their names with a mark (x) which leads me to doubt any member of their family would be a doctor or minister as some of the Grays at that time appear to be in that area. I wonder if anyone has a way to look up the sale of the land of Nancy Gray and Heirs to William Hiett dated May 18, 1849 in Greene Co courthouse Pennsylvania. It must be registered or filed in the Frederick co. courthouse as well. Does anyone have access to a index or book with that kind of info without going to too much trouble?
