He recorded and I have other records which pin point my ancestor John Hampton. He was born in Elpinstone, East Lothian, Scotland, not far come where you are living in Edinburgh area. Said John Hampton removed to Freedhold, Monmouth Co. NJ, as a member of the small Quaker community of that town. I have not been able to find MacKay/McKay etc.. at this early time period in the same area of Scotland. There are a number of them in Glasgow. I do not know if your local libraries in Scotland have other sources dealing with the Quaker communities in the early 1680's to 1700's but these are the books I would check, for the early life of our Robert.

You will want Hopwell Friend History. "Nottingham Quakers 1680-1889" by Alice L. Beard, has information McKay and others. However, I do not like the way she compiled the witnesses of marriage bond. These witness name should have been recorded in separate columns. You might be better off just viewing the originial marriage records on film through L.D.S. library.

Duff & his nephew Robert Green, came from in the "Old County", silence with our Robert MacKay Sr. If this law suit had stated Robert's birth place, then we would know his origins in 1952, then my great-uncle Hunter Branson McKay abtracted & compiled the document. If you had ancestors that purchased lands from McKay/Hite/Green or Lord Fairfax you will want to view this document. Some of the early land grant giving to these people were done by a hand shake and no land deed was issued. I have only one copy left of this work. After that you will have to view the work on film through L.D.S. library or if your local library has a exchange policy with State of VA you can view the work that way. From land deeds from present Cecil Co. MD, we know that Robert Mackay Sr. came from Freehold, Monmouth Co. NJ in 1730's. Robert met his future partners in the PA/MD area. I think Robert might have a connection with the Quaker clerk John MacKay. And his first wife Ann Brown some connection with John Brown a store keeper of early Freedhold, NJ.

Duff, Robert McCay, and Joist Hite on the Shenandoah, 1746. One source states that Joist Hite came to PA with his family and sons-in-law, Robert McKay, Wm. Duff, Robt. Green, et al, and bought land in 1732. Perhaps you could learn more by studying Joist Hite documentation. I think there is quite a bit of it.
