Next to his grave is Mary Magdaline, "wife of George Printz, died 20 Oct. 1823, age 63 yrs, 6 mo. 19 da" - second wife? However, the DAR lineage notes that Elizabeth (Crum) was born in VA and died at Hawksbill, Page Co. on about 1790, married ca. 1764. In that same valley near Hawksbill is a John Crum settler 1778 and a Henry Crum in 1741 in Orange Co. I have not been able to make the conncect with Elizabeth's family.

Daniel W. Marsh was born around 1830 in Cattaraugus County, New York. Aug 31, 1861 he joined the army as a private in Co E of the 5th Cavalary. He was mustered in at New York City in Sept 1861. There is no pension file on record at the national archives, but his service record indicates that he "deserted" at or near Winchester, VA in June of 1862. June 18, to be exact. What actually happened to him remains a mystery. He does not show on any further census with his family in New York or Michigan, nor does he show any where else on any census. Its my feeling that he was most likely killed in action and somehow lost. However the interesting thing is, that with his service record file, which I just recently recieved, there is one sheet, that I had first thought was misplaced. It calls a soldier "Marvin A. Marsh" but lists him as prisoner. It does not tell where or when. I thought at first this was a mistake, but on further thought, it occured to me that perhaps he had given a false name when taken prisoner and escaped at some point. There is no further information available for either of them. The paper packet was pitifully thin and contained a total of 3 sheets for both men. Anyone, who might have information or a possible connection to this man, Please contact me. My email is [email protected] Thank you so much! Carol Barber

His wife's name is not mentioned. Interesting is that a daugther (Elizabeth) of THIS Thomas Jackson married a Benjamin Crampton. But I have no clue who he is!!

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gAC.2ACE/2743.2 Message Board Post: I am going by the information I have on hand. According to John Vogt's marriage book for Augusta Co. VA, has your ancestors' marriage listed as: "McClure, David & Elizabeth Holmes 29 Sep 1795; Minister's return omits David's surname, d. of Samuel of Shenandoah CITY who consents test--Hugh Stuart & James Walker b. David Parry minister Archibald Scott--29 Sep 1795" If you have the originial marriage record and it does give Samuel Holmes as coming from Shenandoah COUNTY, then I guess John Vogt abtracted the marriage record incorrectly. As I recall these early Augusta Co. VA marriage records just a line in a book. But bear in mind both Frederick & Shenandoah counties had already been formed by their marriage. Shenandoah county formed in 1772 & Frederick county formed in 1738. You might want to see if you can find the above Samuel Holmes in other Augusta Co. VA records. My originial statement still remains you will find the surname in Frederick, Shenandoah & Fauquier counties. This surname is found in all my books, therefore in all the original records. I think you should first try to find a death record for your couple.

It would be Shenandoah County, Va., and not the town of Shenandoah in Page County, Va. Shenandoah County, Va. was formed from Frederick County, Va. in 1772. Shenandoah County was originally named Dunmore County, but the name was changed to Shenandoah County in 1778. Nothing changed but the name.
