Hi Carolyn, Our paths cross twice. We both went to Oakland Elementary and, as you mentioned in your last e-mail to me, I went to school with and graduated with your sister Mary. I also went to Lee Junior for 7th grade with Mary, because crowding at Preston Park. Now for the Wade/Cannaday connection. (You could've knocked me over with a feather when I saw your e-mail indicating you are related to me.) My Grandmother was Martha Ann Cannaday who was married to John Henry Wade. Martha's parents were indeed Elkhanah I. Cannaday and Mary Kessler. I was just in Ferrum, VA a few weeks ago where my brother, my cousin Bobby Wade, and I visited the cemetery where Elkhana and Mary are buried. It is located on private land near Prillman Switch Road. (Elkhana served in the 21st VA Infantry during the Civil War.) There are several other Cannadays buried there including brothers and sisters of Martha CANNADAY Wade. I have quite a bit of information on Elkhana's descendants - as well as his ancestors. However, I do not have very much information on the Wade families. Finding more on the Wade families is my current quest. What is your line back to Martha Cannaday? I would like to figure out exactly how, and through whom, we are related. Isn't it interesting that we have exchanged e-mails based on your comments on another list (Floyd?) about Mick-or-Mack on Williamson Rd. etc., and now we find via the Franklin list that we are distant cousins. Small world after all... I will be happy to answer any questions and provide all the genealogy info I have on our relative. Anxious to hear from you... Guess I'll just call you Cuzn. I am 1st cousin, 3 times removed, from a Martha Ann CANNADAY who was a daughter of Elkanah Isaac CANNADAY and Mary KESLER. Is she the same woman mentioned in your email as being married to John Henry WADE? I don't have the name of a husband for her. If you graduated from Fleming in 1963, you probably knew my sister, Mary Hale, who graduated then. We all went to Oakland School, too, back when schools were built for the betterment of the students and not for the aggrandizement of the politicians. We walked to school, even to Fleming and to Preston Park, where I went in the 7th grade. The only one of us five in the Hale family who ever rode a bus to school was Mary, who was sent across town to Lee Junior in the 7th grade. Hope all goes well with you. Hi, Cuzn, This is what I have on the CANNADAYs. Please let me know if anything is in error. I have nothing on Martha Ann(e?) CANNADAY other than that she was a daughter of Elkanah Isaac CANNADAY, Sr., who was b. 26 March 1848 in Franklin CoVA, and Mary KESLER, b. 04 April 1848 in Franklin CoVA, d. 18 October 1935. Elkanah Isaac was the son of James Bailey CANNADAY and Charlotte AGNEW. James Bailey was a son of William "Patrick Billy" CANNADAY and Martha "Patsy" WRIGHT. I descend from this couple through their daughter Charlotte Adeline CANNADAY who m. in Franklin CoVA, 13 Dec 1857, Alexander Jennings THOMPSON. He was b. 23 Nov 1832 in Franklin CoVA, and died a prisoner in a US Army Field Hospital 25 September 1864 as the result of a head wound received at the 2nd (or 3rd?) Battle of Winchester, 19 September 1864. He served as a teamster with Co F, 45th Rgt., C.S.A. Their eldest child was my great-grandmother Martha Ann THOMPSON. "Patrick Billy" was a son of James N. CANNADAY (a Revolutionary War veteran) and Elizabeth "Betty" RAIKES. I know this is just the beginning, but I'm going to have to leave it at this until after tomorrow, when I'll be all day at the Williamsburg Scottish Festival. I'll try to catch up with you by Monday. Sorry. 'Til then, C.
