My wife and I have been clearing up an old cemetery just south of the Radford Cemetery off the Blue Ridge Parkway on road 888. I believe this Graveyard was abandoned when the current Radford Cemetery came into use. We located several hidden grave stones, either in brush or just fallen down and covered with dirt. They are: ( ,= means new line) 1806 ,(with a faint 6 point star or leaf in a circle) broken top, looks like 'NDE' , Aug 27th , 18x9 (x=3 or 8) 1859, Elis U , Died (the 'is' is hard to read and may be wrong) J U S U (U is hard to read) , May 8 1803, 1803 I believe the SU May 8 1803 to be Samuel Underwood born about 1745 son of Samuel Underwood and Anne Travilla and husband to Misniah 'Canaday. This gravestone was under ground just 8 feet from, 1840 Joseph . S U , 1861 Those are in addition to the known grave of: 1840 , Died Joseph Und, erwood April the 9 , Age 78 ys These are in the fence built by Bill Underwood: CH U (Charles Underwood per Bill) Ellender UND Jesse Underwood, was born Nov 26 1852, Departed this life, Dec the 22 1856 AC On the side (edge) of the stone is carved 'J.B. Underwood, 1859' Jesse UND, Dec this LI, May the 7 1850 There are also Radford Stones which I have not cleaned yet. There is more work needed and I'm sure there are more stones. If interested in clearing the area, E-Mail me directly. I also have digital pictures of the stones. Ayn additional information on these individuals would be appreciated Glenn Underwood Petersburg, Va
