<< George Washington Lavinder served in the 19th Va. Infantry in the Civil War- No documents to back this up.>> Hey all, I don't believe (but could be wrong) that George Washington Lavinder served in any Civil War unit officially as he was, according to our family tradition a cripple and used a crutch or cane from an early age. This crutch or cane was taken from George and used as a weapon to kill him in some kind of altercation on the courthouse steps at Rocky Mount. My Gr Gr grandfather Lewis Lavinder is supposed to have revenged the murder of his father and hid out in West Virginia for awhile, but came back at a later date and married Emma Goode in Franklin Co., Virginia. My Gr grandmother was born at Ferrum, Franklin Co., Virginia and later moved to Monroe and then Fayette Co., West Virginia. The Lavinder family of West Virginia was very heavy into the coal industry and were very involved in the mine wars of West Virginia. Any information that expands what is already known of the incident at Rocky Mount would be appreciated.
