    3. There were probably a number of men of the same generation who had the same name, and probably some who served in the war on both sides. My suggestion is to first obtain as much info as you can to firmly establish his identity beginning with Iowa records. Try getting Censuses of 1860 & 1870 for Iowa if that's where you think he might have been after he married. Then if you do, work backwards by using the records you might find about him. You could search the Natl Archives and see how many Peter Hunter's had military service in the Civil War 1) Confederate; 2) Union. The military records usually tell where men enlisted as well as where they were discharged. If you know or learn when and where he died you could start working there because an Obituary might be available... or something.
