Greer listed in the 24th VA Voluntary Infantry Regiment, Company D. He is listed in the following manner: Greer, James E. (2nd Lt.): Enl 23 May 1861 at Lynchburg. Company D of the 24th VA Voluntary Infantry Regiment "was organized 13 May 1861 at Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia; was mustered into service 11 June 1861 at Lynchburg for one year; and was reorganized 10 May 1862."
