How do we get a copy of the tax bill for these people? I found my ancestor in the list. JOHN ROBINSON.. Margaret
What was his name? You'd have to order the microfilm. Do you have access to your local Family History Center? I would recommend looking at the original list from the Virginia State Library and Archives. The list for the Hodges I made from the microfilm of the original is as follows: 1785 Issiah Hodges Wm. Hodges & John Hodges Meshick Hodges Isham Hodges Ebednigo Hodges "Issiah" is probably the one Mrs. Hill has as "Vitoll". I am pretty sure his name was actually Josiah. She missed William and John completely. Generally, the tax book only has a few numbers, such a the number of tithables, horses, cattle, and maybe one or two other items. I have been through all of the Franklin lists up to about 1870 and have some definite views as to the (lack of) completeness and accuracy of the tax lists. Still, they are the best source there is of year by year information on who lived in the county, and I am convinced that the census takers used the personal property tax lists to help them do the census.
