Seems her and her sister swapped names and are identified in documents to confuse things further. Seems that each went by Chloe or Mary and both went by nickname of Polly. Abednego Hodges gave permission for his daughter Chloe to marry William Steagall then later on she is referred to as Mary or Polly. Anyway I am a descendant of William and Mary/Chloe (Hodges) Steagall. I would like to get the name thing straightened out, but the deeper I dig the more confusing it becomes. 1. When the balance of Abed's pension was paid out after his death in 1842, his heirs were identified as Chloe Stegall, Mary Richards, and Elisha Hodges. 2. The marriage bonds identify the wife of William Steagall as Mary and the wife of David Richards as Polly, usually a nickname for Mary. 3. The Census identifies the Steagall wife as Chloe in 1850 (she apparently died before the 1860 census), and the Richards wife as Mary in 1850 (with no David), and Polly in 1860.
