    3. The Samuel Clemens angle is interesting. Raymond Martin Bell was a noted genealogist who first figured out the Clemens side of Mark Twain's ancestry and published a book on it -- The Ancestry of Samuel Clemens, The Grandfather of Mark Twain. Here is a link to some of Bell's publications: http://www.chartiers.com/raybell/toc.htm but it does not include the Clemens book. The Clemens (like the Lincolns) were a East Anglian family that came to Massachusetts, then to Long Island, then to Hunterdon Co., N.J. across the Delaware from Philadelphia, then came to the "Borden Tract" in Rockbridge County, Va. Samuel Clemens of the book title was the brother of my ggggrandmother Cristina Jenett Clemens, and my gggrandfather Samuel C. Crews was apparently named after him when he was born in 1806, shortly after his uncle's death. The Crews lived in Amherst County, Va. and later in Henry and Pittsylvania Counties. At one time John Crews, Jennie Clemens' husband, owned "the Centersville Tract" in Henry County, later called Old Center, where the town of Axton stands today.
