>From the Franklin Co VA Historical Society newsletter, June 07: The monument has stood since 1910. It was erected by the Jubal Early Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy, which was formed in 1902 for the purpose of putting up a suitable monument. When the county could not come up with funding, the women of the chapter began a fundraising campaign. A writing by Miss Essie Smith estimates the cost at around $1800 (1905 dollars) . She said the county had pledged $600 of that amount. The county expects to replace the monument as soon as possible.
