We're winding down to the cut-off date for submissions to be in the "picnic" book. Please get any photos or stories to me by Friday, April 29th, or I can't promise you'll be in the book. Hustle! Theme is "The Greatest Generation of Floyd, Franklin and Patrick Counties, VA". The Researchers Picnic will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Floyd, VA. We have use of the facilities inside the Church. 2. Wear red, white, blue if you wish: the banners and flower pots will all be r/w/b/ to signify the above theme. 3. Three or four crafts: Marie Spangler and her hand-made porcelain dolls dressed in period clothes. Reasonably priced. And they are fantastic!! You can view some of her presentations on Jack Spangler's web site under Crafts, then click on Dolls. Marie will bring some of Jack Spangler's hand-made doll furniture, as Jack will be off in Indiana to a high-school reunion for his wife and will not be able to be there. We will miss them greatly! 4. Charles Spangler is bringing his wonderful hand-made dulcimers and will demonstrate those. They are beautiful. Also reasonably priced. 5. Charlene Wheeler from Riner will present Creative Memories: how to save and preserve your documents and pictures using beautiful archival materials (i.e., decorative paper, stickers, albums, etc.) You all are going to love these ideas!! 6. We MAY have a 4th craft, but we will not know until the first week in June. 7. We will have 3 tables of genealogy related books, prints, postcards and maps of great interest to us about our ancestors that settled in the area. Rena (our Obit Queen), will bring her wonderful genealogically related books as well. 8. Everyone is to bring something to eat!!!! It's potluck and will be delicious as always. (I will get with you later on some particulars that we will need for sure). Linda Stanley will be bringing all of our paper goods that we will use (plates, utensils, napkins, table cloths, etc.), as well as the genealogy books, maps, postcards from Franklin County. We thank you, Linda. 9. Carolyn Hale Bruce will put together a booklet of stories and pictures about those of us who will be so kind as to send to her. This will be one of your favors to take home. And we thank her a million for taking time to do this. Please take the time to send her your material. Barb S. will post to the list when this time is appropriate. Barb S. will also send her some stories and pictures that she has saved from some of us. 10. Ken Brown will take pictures of all going on at the picnic and will post the pictures after the picnic. Or Barb will post them on our web site. We are grateful to Ken for doing this. 11. Wes Poff will use my digital camera and picture printer to take pictures of all of you who want the pictures and will print them right there. This is a dye-thermal printer and the pictures will last 100 years. (Another favor for each of you.) We thank Wes for taking the time to do this for us. 12. Ann Bailey will be bringing genealogy related books about Floyd County and those from the Museum in Newbern. She is also putting news about us in her publication that comes out in April. Jean Schaeffer is posting some news about our Researchers Picnic in the Floyd County Historical Society newsletter. 13. Ole Pat is trying to "scare up" a thing or two from Patrick County for us. ( Right now they are "sold out"). Boo-Hoo!! 14. AND, we will have some "bluegrass music" played by Temple and Daniel Garrison. Ole Paul would like someone to do the "Flatfoot" dance at some point to their music. 15. Now, for our Fabulous Speaker, who will be our own Effie King Brown, a past President of the Floyd County Historical Society. After 94 years, she knows a LOT about our area and will relate some interesting stories and facts, mixed with a wonderful sense of humor. I could listen to her forever!! 16. Our Meal Prayer will be given by the Reverend James Underwood from Roanoke. What a blessing he is!! 17. I am making a banner for EACH meal table. The only reason I mention this is because I want ALL of you to sign and date the banner with the colored pen provided and we will save these from year to year. After all, we ARE The Greatest Generation!!! 18. There will be several drawings for PRIZES!! These are SUR-PRIZES!!! 19. Rena will give a demonstration on "Grave Dowsing," an age-old art that has been used for centuries to locate water, graves and etc. There is a cemetery right behind the Church where we can go to try out Rena's idea of "Grave Dowsing". They have had luck with this in Tazewell County. 20. MissKat suggested this so we put her in charge!! Thanks Kat! Sounds like a lot of fun! Each major family name from the list will be represented by a different color yarn, cut into small strips. People can go past a table and pick up one string for each of the names in their genealogy. If the name appears anywhere in their history, it would count. Then, they will tie these yarn strips onto a big safety pin which they will wear while meeting and greeting. It will be fun to see who ends up with the most colors (for the most different names) and how many people share the same ones. If anyone is looking for kin of a particular name, they can easily recognize "cousins" by seeing if someone has that color yarn on their pin. 21. Also, I think Ole' Pat has something for us from Patrick County, if not, I will try to find something when I get there. I know we will have brochures on the History of Patrick County that Alpha has been talking about. Time is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lucky for us, the Boy Scout Troop in Floyd has agreed to help us set up and clean up. They will be working on their Service Hours. Some of you have been talking about sharing your genealogy with new found relatives: if you can come to the picnic, this would be a super time to do that!! We are REALLY hoping that a lot of the NEW MEMBERS to the list will be able to come. You will have the most wonderful time to put in your memory bank!! We hope we have provided something of interest to all of you. Please plan to come and bring your family, children, grandchildren and friends for a fun filled, spectacular day. Let Barb S. know about how many you will be bringing - E-Mail her at [email protected] ==== VAFLOYD Mailing List ==== Floyd County,Virginia Mailing List Web Site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~barbs/
