Roanoke — Irene Wade Howell, 87, of Roanoke, died Monday, Aug. 6. She was born July 18, 1914, daughter of the late Rev. J.W. and Ida Wade (pastor of Story Creek, Beulah and Providence Baptist Churches in Franklin County). She was secretary to the late Sam Rayburn, speaker of the House of Representatives, United States Congress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis A. Howell. Survivors include stepchildren, Kent and Wendy Howell and Barbara Palmer; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Ruth Wade of Concord, NC; two nephews, Jack and John Wade; and two nieces, Elaine Litaker and Charlotte W. Holcomb. The funeral will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 11 at 2p.m. at Story Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Hamilton Harper. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral. The family suggests memorials be made to the Story Creek Baptist church, 6229 Franklin St., Ferrum, VA 24088.
