(Am searching for my notes on him now. This is not related to my great grandfather Jabel that I know of.) There was a Jeptha Bowles in Franklin County, Virginia about 1750? who was the father of a Jabel Bowles. This Jabel Bowles went off to what is now West Virginia about 1817 as he didn't believe in slavery. There is a Jeptha Bowles who went to Illinois and purchased 6 or 7,000 acres of land in the 1800s but there was a Jeptha before him who also went out west and purchased thousands of acres of land. Will continue searching to verify or refute my memory. Since the Bowles family intermarried with the Hill family this Jeptha could have easily been involved with them also. Right place, right time.
I have an interest in Jeptha Bowles who moved over to WV. My direct line is Jeremiah Bowles, who md Elizabeth Martin, and his son Jeremiah who md Mary Ann Waldon in Franklin Co, and moved to Putnam Co, VA/WV by the 1850 census. His sons were James, Francis Marion, Allen (my direct line), and John. Through the Bowles DNA project, I have learned that Jeremiah and Jeptha were related, but we aren't sure how yet. A descendant of Jeptha and one of my male Bowles cousins match exactly. There is a thrid match to us, so we all three know we are related, but not sure exactly how. ----- Original Message ----- From: <rebecca.dyer@cox.net> To: <vafrankl@rootsweb.com> Cc: <vafrankl-request@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2007 11:02 AM Subject: [VAFRANKL] Mason/Warren > FROM FRANCES ANNE BOWLES: > > Reference: Jackson County History (Lower Mill Creek), page 17 > > MASON FAMILY > > Jeptha Mason, together with Jabel Bowles and Gilbert Boswell, of Franklin > County, Virginia, settled on Parchment about 1818.
