This is explained in detail in a study that was commissioned by PETERS researcher Paula Kelley Ward. A report dated 18 Mar 2002 is the most telling IMHO. From what I've read, (& the evidence is quite compelling) John PETER/PETERS, Sr was the father of Richard, William & John Jr. This family came from England transported by a Mr. Bell & settled in the colony of VA. John Peters, Jr, was the father of sons James, Zachariah & Elisha (oldest to youngest). John Jr served in the French & Indian War & son James fought in the Revolutionary War at places like Guilford Court House, Hot Water, etc. The one thing that continues to baffle me is the lack of those in Zach's family named Richard or Elisha. Especially when you consider the number of those with the given names of William, James, John/Johnathan, Zachariah & Jordan. There has long been speculation that Elisha & Zach were brothers. I first thought this when I read a land transaction listing them both. And descendants of both men are found in the same CW regiment. Not a very scientific model, I realize, but it was common practice for family members to join the same volunteer units during the Civil War. I look forward to continuing this discussion.
