Good Morning list members! I've recently had a "brain storm" or, "brain meltdown", (whichever) and I think that Hannah, who married Nathaniel MASON was a MARTIN--not ADEN. The evidence suggests why: 1. There are no Aden families in the area in 1789. However, take the "M" off of the name, Martin. In longhand, the "artin" looks somewhat like "Aden". 2. Nathaniel Mason had some heavy involvement with the Martin and Woods families. See this: Franklin Co. Order Book 1789-1793. P. 138. June, 1791. Nathan Mason is appointed surveyor of the road in place of Hugh Martin and the list filed to be his gang. Franklin Co. VA Order Book 1793-1799. P. 69, July, 1794. (Robert Martin being a son of Hugh Martin, and brother to Hannah.) It would explain Nathan Mason's witnessing Robert Wood's probate records in 1811. It would explain Nathan Mason being the owner of the slave George. It might explain Sarah Woods sueing Nathan Mason in 1814-1816. (Sarah was Josiah Wood's wife.) Lastly, it might explain Nathaniel Mason's witnessing the deed in 1816 of John Martin and Nancy his wife to John Pinkard--possibly placing this John Martin as a brother of Hannah's.

Hello Marla Glad to see you are still trying to sort out these Martins! I also like the way you are pushing the envelope in your reasoning with your latest brain storm. While my post today may not have much to do with your latest line of questioning, I will nonetheless throw it into the pot. We corresponded some time ago about John Potter Martin and that led to some additional correspondence (off-list) of mine with Judy Belle Horick about Potter Martin. Judy, if you are still on the list, "Gruezi from Paul in Switzerland." Judy was kind enough to send me a bunch of info. about John Potter after he left Franklin County with the Hauser family around 1820. Here is one snippet of that information that Judy sent me. The historical society in Meigs County, TN published a book entitled "The History of Meigs County, Tennessee, and It's [sic] People 1836-1997" which was a collection of remembrances of local Meigs County people about friends and ancestors. One of the pieces in that book was entitled "Samuel F. and Parthenia Martin," by Joyce Proffitt, Rt. 1 Box 249, Decatur, TN 37322. In it, Joyce Proffitt stated, "My great, great, great-grandfather John Martin was born in 1755 in Franklin County, Virginia. He left Virginia and went to Kentucky for one year. then moved to southeastern Tennessee and settled here in 1820. We know that James and Margaret Martin were John's parents and they were in Franklin, Virginia in the early 1700's." I have reviewed our email exchanges about the Martins and don't think I have relayed this bit of data to you, but if I thought I would pass it along anyhow. These types of testaments are frequently wrong about specific facts, but at least, it is a piece of data that might be worth pursuing, if you haven't already done so. Joyce Proffitt doesn't say how she knows that James and Margaret were John's parents; its likely that it was always told that way in the family. All the best in the coming new year as well as sorting out the Franklin County hotbed of Martins, Paul
The following information is based primarily on the 1782 Henry County Personal Property Tax List, which is not alphabetized in this section. The names on the time line (below) are land owners, in order along the road. Some names presented below, such as Calloway and Waggoner, were land owners, but not residents, of Chestnut Creek. I have presented this information in hopes of determining possible marriages that are not known to be recorded in Henry or Franklin Counties. Perhaps it may also help in the formation of a map. What kind of help and what kind if map? I think if you have the plat book Pittsylvania County (started for "the Western District of Lunenburgh"), you can go right up the creek. The mouth of the creek on Pigg River was the western boundary of the 10,000-acre William Gray-Ashford Hughes orders in council. The land in the fork belonged to Lewis Morgan. The next patent was to Israel Pickens, next above that Thomas Hall. Then (IIRC) Edward Richards, Robert Hodges (fork of the Creek), James Stewart. There may have been a couple more, then a big patent to Robert Walton that went down about to the Muddy Fork. I have mapped out part of this but my scanner doesn't work right now (new computer, software problem). I don't think drawing a map would be hard, especially if you have access to some platting software. Hi Bob, thanks for your reply. The information that you sent is exactly what I'm looking for! As far as I can tell, there were 2 mills on Chestnut Creek, one owned by the Thorntons and the other by Robert Mason. Do you know if the road ran along the creek? I haven't seen the plat book of Pittsylvania Co. Where can I get it? I don't have expertise in drawing a map or the software. It's too bad that you and Dan are having software problems. Hi Paul, it's good to hear from you again. It'd be SO great if we can get these Martins sorted out! I think that from what you've shown, that everything fits for John the Potter to be the son of James Martin. He married Margaret Bowman in 1794--so she can't be his mother, as John was b. abt 1765. I appreciate getting all the information that you have shared on the Martins! Marla
