Linda: In the book "Over the Mountain Men Their Early Court Records in Southwest Virginia" by Anne Lowry Worrell, 1934, reprint by GPC 1996, p. 17, there are listed 5 Potter marriages. The one for Moses you quote is: Potter, Moses, and Frances Kirby, dau. Dicey Bartee - July 14, 1789 Most of the entries appear to be bonds, certainly those with Sureties named were bonds. After a bond was filed the couple could have been married the same day or at a later date in a church or at home, etc., supplying us with the reason we often find so many discrepancies in marriage dates. Many old publications or manuscripts on families often cited the date of the bond as the marriage date. It's nice to have both for one's own family, but a lot of the time we have to settle for either the bond date or a minister's return after the actual marriage ceremony took place. In the entry above for Moses there is no surety listed. I can't guess why. If Frances K. was actually the daughter (yes, it was abbreviated as dau.) of Dicey Bartee, then I will venture a guess Frances' mother Dicey had remarried by July 14 '89.
