Hi, Bev, BTW... I descend from the THOMASes, too. 8~) My John SMITH may never be traced to his roots by any means other than DNA. So far, no researcher has been able to make a solid connection to his parents. I believe that the father of Daniel may have been Daniel of the following research notes: CLEMENT, Maud CARTER **THE HISTORY OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA** Baltimore: Regional Publishing Company Co., 1987 (Reprint). p. 39: "In 1740 Gideon and Daniel SMITH made several entries for land along with the Clouds [apparently English Quakers from Pennsylvania]. Gideon SMITH, Sr., died about 1755, when the church wardens [See Halifax County records] bound his two orphan daughters, Peninah and Keziah, to Daniel SMITH. It was probably for these two early settlers and hunters, Daniel and Gideon SMITH, that Smith Mountain in the northern part of the county, and Smith River were named." ibid., p. 51: "In the year 1745 Daniel SMITH came into [Lunenburg County] Court and moved that his name be added to the list of tithables..." Lunenburg had been formed from Brunswick County in 1745, and would split in 1752 to form Halifax County. I wish I had more to offer, but this is all I've come up with so far, and you may already have it. And, of course, I have no proof that your Daniel is the son of this Daniel, but the age would be about right.
