Hello Everyone, A branch of this Renfro family being discussed eventually wound up in Dade County Missouri, where they moved right in and in some cases intermarried with my Bird, Choate, Simmons & other families (and their fellow travelers) who had origins in Franklin County...via Robertson County TN (area around Cross Plains and east almost to White House on the Sumner County border -- deeds refer to Sulphur Fork of the Red River). The connections with the Renfros are found in many places in between and beyond, following various branches of these families hither and yon. The patriarch of this Dade County branch was Absalom Renfro, and wife Mary Penn. He is said to be the son of Lewis Renfro and Sarah Absalom, son of James Renfro and Lydia Harris, son of William Renfro and Elizabeth Cheney. I got this information from the following WorldConnect website which has an awful lot of documentation, though I have problems with the Quaker Pennsylvanians ending up in James City County VA (wayy over on the Chesapeake Bay), as is indicated. Maybe some of you can enlight me on this, though it makes sense with the Turpin connection. The following link is to Moses Renfro and (a) Hannah Rentfro and (b) Elizabeth Turpin. _http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=deloreswilley&id=I12882_ (http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=deloreswilley&id=I12882) I have separate connections with the Turpin family, via my Bentleys in Powhatan Co. VA in the late 1700s, early 1800s. I have not researched any of the above Renfros, but thought you all might like all the information hidden in the above website (regardless of accuracy to which I can't attest). Best Regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

Gay, Thank you very much for your information. Yes, the Red River I referred to is in present day Montgomery county, I think. This is where Moses Rentfro built his station. Would any one with information or pictures of Walter Albert Bernard who married Abigail Hambrick in Franklin Co please contact me. I am interested in family stories. Was there a rift of some sort between Walter and his parents? What was the story with him and Abigail -- he probably never married her as he had no will so he was living off of her. Is he the same Albert Bernard living in Camden county New Jersey with a Susan Bernard in 1860? I hear comments of questionable parentage of some in Franklin county - any opinions on why Franklin county had a penchant for that kind of thing? These were not all poor lower class after all. Especially interested in stories or clues as to Walter Albert Bernard's life previous to when he shows up on the census in 1870. Thanks, Susan
Tony, Thanks so much for your notes. They are so interesting to me. I will copy them off, study them and get back to you. The Renfro's and Turpins intermarried more than once so I follow the Renfro's also. Diane, My Turpins were with the Rentfros at Red River. My Susannah was the daughter of Soloman Turpin. Some think he married a Renfro. They were on the flotilla. They ended up in Madison Co. KY along with Champion Turpin who later married Susannah. I suppose they were cousins. Renfros were in Madison Co. also. A James Turpin had land in Franklin Co. near the Renfros. He was on the trip also but I believe he went with Robertson by land. Moses Renfro's second wife was a Turpin. I have house guests. Will get back to you both soon. Notes: The Red River This area was at one time in Kentucky and in 1828 The Walker Line was drawn up between these two State. Folks that were once Kentuckians found them selves in Tennessee and Folks who were Tennesseans found them selves Kentuckians. and this was not their choose, as the Federal Government redrew the State lines. To even add more problems the Territory of Ohio also claimed the Drainage of the Tennessee River as being in Ohio before Statehood. Then over in Eastern Kentucky you have to deal with the Lost State of Franklin as it claimed the lands of Eastern Tennessee and Kentucky and parts of Current Day West Virginia. My Millie was born to "one of the 3 Rentfro brothers at Rentfro Station on the Red River". I have eliminated Moses and one of the James as her father. My Millie married Moses Shelby and moved to Kentucky. They lived in Livingston Co until 1812, when they moved to New Madrid, MO. A John Rentfro posted bond for their son's marriage in KY in 1821. I have thought he was the son of Joseph and Olive Rentfro. Joseph was killed by indians around 1780, and Olive later showed up in Livingston Co, KY, living near this John, who died in KY. But another researcher shows their son John living and dying in Tenn. I have tried to chart out a huge family tree, but there are so many with the same name, it's hard to keep them straight. Suzy those are just part of my notes in my RENFRO Files, I was wondering if you would a COPY of the Renfro file sent to you. Reason Turpins are the first Families married into the William Hatcher born 1613 and died on Swift Creek, Henrico Co. His descendants include one General James Randolph Robertson who with John Donelson are the Founders of the Washugual Settlement: General James Robertson also descends from these Colonial Randolph Virginia Families. Included in the descendants of William Hatcher is the Hairstone families as they married a Female Stovall off the lines of William Hatcher b 1613. All the Colonial Virginia Randolph families are descendant of the De Bohun Families of Scotland and are married into the Planatagenet Families, which include King James the first (aka King James 5th or 6th of Scotland) Tony ----- Original Message ----- From: SuzyH2610@aol.com<mailto:SuzyH2610@aol.com> To: vafrankl@rootsweb.com<mailto:vafrankl@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2007 10:01 AM Subject: Re: [VAFRANKL] Rentfro Family (WAS: Pigg River Cem etc. Tony, Thanks so much for your notes. Do you know of Renfro Valley, Kentucky? It has long been a mainstay of performance venues in Kentucky. Renfro Valley, Kentucky Renfro Valley is a Rockcastle county community just north of Mount Vernon and now within its city limits. It was named for Renfro Creek which was named for James Renfro, an early land owner in the area. Settlement began around 1789. The Renfro Valley post office opened in 1939. >From the History Book of Grayson Co, Texas, and submitted by Dr. Roy Edward Renfro Jr. The following is what he published in the book in 1980. This is a short biog of what he wrote: He descends from Haden Wilson Renfro and wife Rachel Ellen Preston who came to Fannin Co, Tx from Barren Co, Ky. The Renfro heritage spans over 300 years, as land grant records in Va before 1638. Three brothers, James, Joseph and William were the forefathers of most present day Renfros in America. William born 1702 in James City County, Va married Elizabeth China in 1726. Their son William was born May 14, 1734 Va and died Sept 1, 1830 in Culleoka, Maury Co, Tenn at age of 96. First wife unknown but to them were born 6 children: John, Lydia, Jane, Moses, Jesse, and Nancy. William's homeplace is standingon the banks of Fountain Creek east of Culleoka, Tenn. The log house and it's magnificient chimneys were built before Tenn statehood and were previously in North Carolina. William is buried in the family cemetery on a tree-coveredridge behind the Renfro home. William's first son John, was Haden's grandfather, he was born Nov12, 1760, in Bedford Co, Va, and died April 22, 1846 in Barren Co, Ky. John married Esther Peak Feb 1781 Henry Co, Va. Both John and Father William fought in the Rev War, signed allegiance, Henry Co, Va courthouse 1777. John was a drummer boy and private in the cavairy, commanded by Capt Hairston of the regiment commanded by Col. Shelby in the Va militia. In his pension application he stated his father returned from the battle of yorktown and the surrender of General Cornwallis. John and Esther had 6 sonsIsaac, Jesse, John, William, Joshua and Joseph.. Haden's father was Joseph who was born June 21, 1801 in South Carolina and died Oct 1853 in Warren Co, Ky. Joseph married Sarah Ralston April 28, 1821 Barren Co, Ky. Joseph and Sarah had 13 children: Beverly, Robert, Schuyler, James Robert, John William, Thomas J., Isabel Susan, Catherine, Hardin Davis, Joseph R., Sarah E., Martha Ellen and Haden Wilson who was born Aug 22, 1849 Barren Co, Ky and died Dec 31, 1917 Fannin Co, Texas. I hope this helps someone and I am not of this line, but have met the Renfro's. Gay Nix Denison, Texas Gay Nix warpaint1128@sbcglobal.net

There were some early Turpins in Henrico/Goochland/Cumberland Cos VA. They migrated to SW VA around the 1760's.
I have Dillon, English and Pagans in that area. I hate to ask for that many at one time though. Whatever you can do, I am grateful. For 20 plus years I have been banging my head against a brick wall to the point I think my Nancy Jane HANSBROW sprang from the earth at age 5 (b. 1845 Wayne Co., IL) with her older brother John age 8 (born 1842 Wayne, Co., IL) in tow. First of all let's look at her surname I have found it as: Hansbro Hansbrow Hansbrough Hansborough Hansbra Hansbraw Hansbrew oh well you get the idea. I've even see original spellings for these lineages as Ansberry, and Hansberry. Which is correct? Who knows. She and big brother John first appear in the 1850 Wayne Co., IL census in the home of S. Boyd (I'll post the census in a bit) in 1860 Jefferson Co., IL census she, alone--no John,( I have not been able to find any record of John anywhere since then) appear in the family of Jehu/John NORMAN, again census in a bit. Over the years she married three times that I know of adding children along the way. 1. George M. BOYKIN b. 1842 Jefferson Co. IL d. bef 1868 s/o William Mills BOYKIN and Mary Ann HOLT (who was previously married to James B. BOND) 2. Elias or Ellis Wigginton b. 1848 IL d. 1868 s/o Nathaniel Wigginton and Mary McLain 3. Seth Ward WEBBER b. 1849 Jefferson Co., IL d. 1920 in Wayne Co., IL s/o Seth Ward Webber and E. Jane Crawford or Samuel Webber (marriage license says Seth, but other paperwork leads some to believe it was actually Samuel) All three of her marriages were in Jefferson Co., IL. Finally about a week ago a light bulb went off in my head. WHY were those two children in first the BOYD family and then the NORMAN family? They were far too young to be servants. Turns out John NORMAN was married to Emily J. Hansbraugh d/o John HANSBROUGH and Sarah M. GRUBBS (the parents were married in Frederick Co., VA). So most likely Nancy Jane HANSBROW is niece, but by who? I can't find a connection. Was maybe one of John's sisters married to a Hansbrow? Or one of Emily's brothers is the father of these children? I have found no connection at all to the BOYD family, which appears to be the family of Solomon BOYD b. 1782 Franklin, VA and his first wife Mahala DALE b. 1805 Hamilton, IL. Solomon later married Melvina HUFFSTUTLER b. abt 1810. This makes me think that perhaps Nancy and John were related to Mahala Dale's family since his marriage took place in 1859 and if the children weren't related to him then it would make perfect sense he would send them to other relatives. So, does anyone have connections between any of these surnames that might help me broaden my search? I would REALLY appreciate any help you can give on this matter. census and other notes: in 1850 in the S. Boyd family as 15 in the M. Boyd. family in the Ill state archives lists as has no family.
