    2. In a message dated 10/11/2007 1:44:52 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, cdhbruce@cox.net writes: Zachariah PETERS, b. abt. 1770, possibly in Amherst CoVA, d. Franklin CoVA, m. 18 Nov 1794 in Amherst CoVA Keziah LIVELY. His father possibly named William Carolyn, There is now very STRONG circumstantial evidence re: the ancestry of Zachariah Peters. This is explained in detail in a study that was commissioned by PETERS researcher Paula Kelley Ward. A report dated 18 Mar 2002 is the most telling IMHO. From what I've read, (& the evidence is quite compelling) John PETER/PETERS, Sr was the father of Richard, William & John Jr. This family came from England transported by a Mr. Bell & settled in the colony of VA. John Peters, Jr, was the father of sons James, Zachariah & Elisha (oldest to youngest). John Jr served in the French & Indian War & son James fought in the Revolutionary War at places like Guilford Court House, Hot Water, etc. The one thing that continues to baffle me is the lack of those in Zach's family named Richard or Elisha. Especially when you consider the number of those with the given names of William, James, John/Johnathan, Zachariah & Jordan. There has long been speculation that Elisha & Zach were brothers. I first thought this when I read a land transaction listing them both. And descendants of both men are found in the same CW regiment. Not a very scientific model, I realize, but it was common practice for family members to join the same volunteer units during the Civil War. I look forward to continuing this discussion. Respectfully, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. Good morning everyone, There is a marriage in Wingfield's book on page 152, Mason, Nathan and Hannah Aden, July 6, 1789. Sur. Swinfield Hill. I've looked and looked, and I cannot find the surname "Aden" in Franklin County. Writing that name in script, perhaps the "A" and "d" together, make the letter "W", leaving "W en". Perhaps that turns into "Warren"? Do the names "Hannah", "William" (first son) or "Jeptha" (unknown) run in the Warren lines? Thanks for any help. Marla

    3. Hello Carolyn, You and I have corresponded previously regarding the Clan MacThomas. I used to be the NC State Rep for the U.S. Branch of the Clan MacThomas Society of Scotland. Anyway, I see from your message below that we are sort of related! John Henry Thomas was my great uncle. My grandfather, Buford Holston Thomas, was John Henry's elder brother. My dad, Richard Buford Thomas, and John Maynard Thomas were 1st cousins and grew up together. I am in regular contact with my cousin, Barbara Saunders, who is John Maynard's daughter. I would love to share our Thomas family genealogy and history with you. Perhaps we can help fill in gaps for one another? Robert (Bobby) E. 3. Interesting, Priscilla, I have cousins with the surnames EDWARDS, POWELL, and THOMAS, the last being one of my ancestral names as well. All are in some form associated with Franklin CoVa, as are most of my relatives. My mother's sister married John Ballard EDWARDS, son of Thomas Abraham EDWARDS and Druscilla Ann VIA. My 4great-grandmother was a daughter of Charles THOMAS and Judy PATTERSON. Her name was Mary "Polly" THOMAS, and she married John Witt NOWLIN in 1799, Patrick CoVA, and lived in Franklin CoVA. My first cousin Frances Christine HOLCOMB married Ira Glenwood POWELL in 1938. Her sister, Ethel Eileen, married John Maynard THOMAS, son of John Henry THOMAS and Bessie FRANKLIN. Unfortunately, I don't readily see any links that we can follow. But thanks for your reply. I thought we had something there for a little while. I belong to the Lynnhaven Parish Chapter, NSDAR, and my first patriot is Amelia CoVA native Jennings THOMPSON, who m. 1790 in Pittsylvania CoVA, Elizabeth STREET. I had the privilege of being the first to join under his name. Next I'm working on John VEST of Bedford/Campbell CoVA. Keep digging... we may find some roots that tangled together somewhere along the line. 3. Sorry Carolyn - none in my many lines in Franklin Co. I am looking for info on ROBERT E. POWELL [Sr & Jr ~ both lived around Pennhook/Pigg River] JEREMIAH BARBOUR only who his parents were as I have the rest of the info; Nancy Allen Edwards m. Homer Hamilton Powell in Pitts Co, lived also in Fr Co - looking for info on her grandmother MARY ALLEN, mother of George A. Edwards - anything would be fine. I am also DAR, Jean Nicolet Chapter, Green Bay, WI [how ever did I get way out here?]. My patriots are Lewis Hancock f/o Lucinda m. Charles L. Powell of Fr Co; John Hancock, f/o Lewis; and George Duncan,f/o Celia who m. Lewis Hancock. Working on Robert E. Powell, Sr. and need proof of his marriage to Caty [Catherine] Tuggle, Middlesex Co, and proof of her death before 8/1811. I have his Will and Inventory of that date and she is gone by then. Also working on Daniel Coleman Edwards and Maddox/Mattox. Don't know whether there are patriots there yet. Any ideas, I thank you in advance. I have a large file at the Fr Co Historical Soc. which I sent earlier this year. 1. [VAFRANKL] SCOTT/JONES Genealogy

    3. I am looking for information on William B. SCOTT and Julia Ann JONES from Franklin County. This is what I know: William B. SCOTT was born abt. 1813 in VA Julia Ann Jones was born abt. 1814 in VA 1835 - Their marriage bond was on 4 Nov. 1835 in Franklin County, VA, with Henry JONES as surety. I am not sure how Henry is related to Julia, possibly a brother. I believe her mother is named Mary, as there is a Mary JONES listed on the 1850 census with Julia's family. 1840 - William B. SCOTT is listed on the 1840 Franklin County census. 1850 - This family is on the 1850 census in Barren County, KY. Note: All their children are listed as being born in VA, including the youngest child, which means that they moved sometime in 1850 from VA to KY. William B. Scott, 37, b. in VA Juliann, 36, VA John O., 16, VA James D., 14, VA Nancy J., 12, VA Mary L., 10, VA William H., 7, VA Sophia M., 6, VA Judy E., 5, VA Josiah A., 3, VA Lucinda, 8 months, VA Mary Jones, 71, VA 1860 - This family is on the 1860 census in Allen County, KY (split from Barren County). After the 1860 census, I could only find 1 child, Willis, who was living with a family in MO. In later years, his obit showed that he was orphaned at a young age. He was born in 1854, so I am assuming that William and Julia died shortly after 1860. I am trying to find the parents of William B. Scott and Julia Ann Jones. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Also, are there any records that may show the births of their children in the early to mid 1800's? Thank you, Leslie _________________________________________________________________ Help yourself to FREE treats served up daily at the Messenger Café. 3. Hi, Cuzn, This is what I have on the CANNADAYs. Please let me know if anything is in error. I have nothing on Martha Ann(e?) CANNADAY other than that she was a daughter of Elkanah Isaac CANNADAY, Sr., who was b. 26 March 1848 in Franklin CoVA, and Mary KESLER, b. 04 April 1848 in Franklin CoVA, d. 18 October 1935. Elkanah Isaac was the son of James Bailey CANNADAY and Charlotte AGNEW. James Bailey was a son of William "Patrick Billy" CANNADAY and Martha "Patsy" WRIGHT. I descend from this couple through their daughter Charlotte Adeline CANNADAY who m. in Franklin CoVA, 13 Dec 1857, Alexander Jennings THOMPSON. He was b. 23 Nov 1832 in Franklin CoVA, and died a prisoner in a US Army Field Hospital 25 September 1864 as the result of a head wound received at the 2nd (or 3rd?) Battle of Winchester, 19 September 1864. He served as a teamster with Co F, 45th Rgt., C.S.A. Their eldest child was my great-grandmother Martha Ann THOMPSON. "Patrick Billy" was a son of James N. CANNADAY (a Revolutionary War veteran) and Elizabeth "Betty" RAIKES. I know this is just the beginning, but I'm going to have to leave it at this until after tomorrow, when I'll be all day at the Williamsburg Scottish Festival. I'll try to catch up with you by Monday. 3. Hi Carolyn, Our paths cross twice. We both went to Oakland Elementary and, as you mentioned in your last e-mail to me, I went to school with and graduated with your sister Mary. I also went to Lee Junior for 7th grade with Mary, because crowding at Preston Park. Now for the Wade/Cannaday connection. (You could've knocked me over with a feather when I saw your e-mail indicating you are related to me.) My Grandmother was Martha Ann Cannaday who was married to John Henry Wade. Martha's parents were indeed Elkhanah I. Cannaday and Mary Kessler. I was just in Ferrum, VA a few weeks ago where my brother, my cousin Bobby Wade, and I visited the cemetery where Elkhana and Mary are buried. It is located on private land near Prillman Switch Road. (Elkhana served in the 21st VA Infantry during the Civil War.) There are several other Cannadays buried there including brothers and sisters of Martha CANNADAY Wade. I have quite a bit of information on Elkhana's descendants - as well as his ancestors. However, I do not have very much information on the Wade families. Finding more on the Wade families is my current quest. What is your line back to Martha Cannaday? I would like to figure out exactly how, and through whom, we are related. Isn't it interesting that we have exchanged e-mails based on your comments on another list (Floyd?) about Mick-or-Mack on Williamson Rd. etc., and now we find via the Franklin list that we are distant cousins. Small world after all... I will be happy to answer any questions and provide all the genealogy info I have on our relative. Anxious to hear from you... If you graduated from Fleming in 1963, you probably knew my sister, Mary Hale, who graduated then. We all went to Oakland School, too, back when schools were built for the betterment of the students and not for the aggrandizement of the politicians. We walked to school, even to Fleming and to Preston Park, where I went in the 7th grade. The only one of us five in the Hale family who ever rode a bus to school was Mary, who was sent across town to Lee Junior in the 7th grade. Hope all goes well with you.
