Good job to all those who participated - I am very impressed with what I have read and seen of this event. If someone can send me a photo of the marker after it was placed, I'd like to add it to the VAFRANKLIN website along side of the Pension app. Thank's Rena
Thank you for sharing the pictures.. Truly enjoyed. My late husband's people were from Franklin Co Va. His grandfather James W. Sink was a soldier serving Jubal Early in Va.. I missed getting to attend this event due to a death in my family, however here is the story on WDBJ7. My hat is off to all who made this happen. http://www.wdbj7.com/Global/story.asp?S=7342166 Rena PS: Moral to this story---Photograph every marker you can. If you want it added to our site, please send it along. If not, then preserve the cemetery by donating a copy to your local historical or genealogical society.

Thanks Beverly. I was wondering if that might be the case. Can you give me an idea of exactly which court records I should be looking in? This is not a resource type that I am familiar with. I currently live in Texas, but my parents are in VA, so I may be able to get them to do some research, but I have to be able to tell them exactly what they are looking for! Thanks! Hi Sara, Unfortunately there are no old papers for Franklin County for that time period, unless someone, somewhere might have a stray copy. The only papers we have on microfilm begin about the 1940s. The Library of Virginia has a newspaper project and you might contact them to see if they have one for that time. If he was murdered there should be something in the court records about that. It's "Late Night in the Virginia Room", an evening of virtual grave digging, ghost hunting and soul searching. Family historians know what we're talking about; it's called genealogy research. On Friday, October 26, at the Main Library, from 6:00pm-11:00pm, the Roanoke Public Libraries is hosting this special event for "Night Owl" researchers. Enjoy a night of research in the Virginia Room with complimentary pizza and refreshments. "Dead on the Web", a computer lab class exploring death and cemetery records on the Internet, will also be offered that evening. "Late Night" and "Dead on the Web" will be held at the Main Library, 706 S. Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA. Both are free and open to the public. Registration is required, as the library will not be open to the general public after regular hours. Call 540-853-2073 or email varoom@roanokeva.gov for more information and to register.
Posted on ancestry.com under Illinois Public Land Purchase Records information, JEPTHA BOWLES purchased 5472 acres of land on 10 May 1852 for 125 a acre for a total of 6840 (I assume it is in dollars). It was purchased in NWFR section and recorded in Volume 147, Page 139. fa
Dear Gracie, Wow, because Jabel nearly drove me crazy until I figured out there were two of them, I have gathered a pile of information. Was sure we were all connected somehow until my gg grandfather turned out to be Alexander Hamilton Bowles - the DNA didn't match. I was depressed for a while over that one. Will go through some more of these papers and see what I can find. Jeptha and Jeremiah - who would have thunk it. I have an interest in Jeptha Bowles who moved over to WV. My direct line is Jeremiah Bowles, who md Elizabeth Martin, and his son Jeremiah who md Mary Ann Waldon in Franklin Co, and moved to Putnam Co, VA/WV by the 1850 census. His sons were James, Francis Marion, Allen (my direct line), and John. Through the Bowles DNA project, I have learned that Jeremiah and Jeptha were related, but we aren't sure how yet. A descendant of Jeptha and one of my male Bowles cousins match exactly. There is a thrid match to us, so we all three know we are related, but not sure exactly how. ----- Original Message ----- From: <rebecca.dyer@cox.net> To: <vafrankl@rootsweb.com> Cc: <vafrankl-request@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2007 11:02 AM Subject: [VAFRANKL] Mason/Warren > FROM FRANCES ANNE BOWLES: > > Reference: Jackson County History (Lower Mill Creek), page 17 > > MASON FAMILY > > Jeptha Mason, together with Jabel Bowles and Gilbert Boswell, of Franklin > County, Virginia, settled on Parchment about 1818. In a message dated 10/11/2007 1:44:52 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, cdhbruce@cox.net writes: Zachariah PETERS, b. abt. 1770, possibly in Amherst CoVA, d. Franklin CoVA, m. 18 Nov 1794 in Amherst CoVA Keziah LIVELY. His father possibly named William Carolyn, The summary of the report previously mentioned reads: "It now appears that John PETERS, Sr., first settled in Albemarle County, Virginia, on the area that is currently the southern part of Albemarle County, adjacent Nelson County. He was the father of Richard, William, and John PETERS, Jr. His sons purchased land in what is now Amherst County in 1760, but John PETERS, Jr., sold his land in 1763 and appears to have lived in the same vicinity as Zachariah, Elisha, and James PETERS, in what is now southern Nelson County. John PETERS, Jr., was almost certainly the father of Zachariah, Elisha, and James PETERS. "Military records show that John PETERS, Jr., was born in England about 1730/1731. John BELL transported John BELL, Henry MARTIN, John PETER, John PETER, Jr., William PETER, and Catharine PETER from England to the colony of Virginia. Catherine was probably the wife or daughter of John PETERS, Sr. "The lack of probate records for members of the PETERS family leaves conclusions to be drawn based on this circumstantial evidence.
