    1. [VAFRANKL] Civil War Skirmish
    2. I am seeking information on a skirmish in VA where my g-grandmother's brother died in 1861. I was told that he died at "Kentucky, VA." I have tried to find where this might have been. A while back I was told there was a community named Kentuck in Pittsylvania Co. Does any one know if it is possible that there was a skirmish there at one time? This man was the only son in the family, and he had two children. His mother named them, and the sisters divided some property with the two children. I sure would like to find out if he is buried there or where he is. Margaret

    1. [VAFRANKL] Elijah Hodges-Franklin County VA
    2. Alison D Martin
    3. I have sent this information to the list before with no luck and am just taking another wild stab in the dark that maybe someone new joined or new info has surfaced that I am unaware of. My 3rd great grandfather was Elijah A Hodges born in Franklin County Virginia in June 1854. This birthdate comes from his marriage liscense where he married my third great grandmother Sabina Vaughan on December 25 1873. He gives he age as 19 as of last June and his birthplace as Franklin County Virginia. His mother is reported to have been Rebecca Jenkins Hodges but I have no proof of this and only word of mouth through the family. His father is said to have been a civil war soldier who went off and was never heard from again and assumed dead. Is there any authority out there on the Franklin County Va Hodges. I know there were tons of them. Has anyone straightened them out? Any clues to find out who my Elijah might belong to? I will enclose a listing of his children as maybe their names may ring a bell with someone. Any help on this appreciated Alison Martin - -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Elijah A. 1. [VAFRANKL] BOONE-HARDY CEM. NOTES
    2. Here I am again...Boy trying to give things away is hard...I was going through some things (you know what I mean) and came across my hand drawn map and notes from a visit to the Boone-Hardy Cem. If the map does not go through..just e-mail me and I will send it snail-mail. I just checked...and it didn't go through!!!!!!! MY NOTES......... Boone-Hardy Cemetery, Boone's Mill, Franklin Co. VA visited Aug 1971 and fall of 1975 The cem is located on a hill, the top of a graded area now. The hill Was surely there before the land around it was graded away. I was told that it was graded to make more room for the factory and parking. The men doing the work came to the "un-kown" cem and went no further, working around the base of the hill. The factory is located at the base of the graded area at the RR tracks. (then anyway) The mill is at the cross road and the "old church" on the other side of the four corners. (I'm sure things have changed now) The cem is divided by a narrow old two trenched road. You can tell that it was old by its width and the fact that the wheel ruts were deep. It seems like the Boone's are on one side and the Hardy's on the other. It is surrounded by trees, that more than likely, were planted as to form a boundary on all sides. The stones and markers are scattered, without a pattern of burials. Of course the markers could have been moved or vandalized over the years by persons or grazing stock. The Hardy side has about 20 field stone markers.....some appear to be in line as markers are arranged on grave sites, others not. I found only 2 that had an inscription and they were very worn. The Boone side appears to be in better condition, as far as noting graves go. It is located at the "front" of the area. At the front there 3 rows of field stone markers. They are at or near indentations in the earth. (this is a good sign of a burial) Back from these rows are located large, upright, engraved markers. I question the original location of the markers.....things seem to be in such disarray. The "front" of the cem seems to face the back of the old church. People I talked to in the area said that they heard stories that the cem and church were connected. I could find no real proof of this, but tradition of this sort is usually good information. I know there are WEBSTER AND BAGBY'S there. That was the reason for the visit. But alas no markers with those names on them. The WEBSTER, KESSLER AND BOONE'S came to Michigan in the early 1830s and settled in Berrien Co. This is what I gleaned as to inscriptions......... HARDY SIDE: W.H. J.A. (these may be foot stones) BOONE SIDE: "Sacred to the Memory of" GEORGE KESSLER born Nov 24, 1791 died Feb 5, 1854 M.S.W. died Feb____1876 MARY BOONE "wife of LUDWICK KESSLER" born Dec 12, 1771 died Mar 23, 1853 G.K. ISAAC BOONE born Dec 20, 1786 died May 28, 1841 "This stone erected by WILLIAM BOONE, his brother" M.B. I.B. J.Boone_________1814 age 63 years ORIN BOONE March 9, 1835-Feb 24, 1838 "The little boy is gone to rest, to dwell with God forever blessed, his youthful tongue will always praise a Saviors love and redeeming grace" These are all I have recorded as marked graves. I think the ones with only initials on them are foot markers. The church can be seen from the cem and visa versa. I remember a lovely place and hope to visit it again someday. Maybe this will spark someone to check it out and up date what I have. oooO ( ) \ ( Daundra Baker in Michigan \_ )

    2. Am searching for wedding & death information re: my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters. Jonathan Peters was born 23 April 1827 in Franklin County, VA & died sometime after 1900 in probably Raleigh County, WVa. I have found 3 marriages for Jonathan Peters listed in Raleigh County Marriage records transcribed by Pauline Haga. They are as follows: * 10 June 1852 to Catherine Dickens * 6 February 1896 to Spicy Catherine Vealey * 27 June 1899 to Sarah Margaret Pittman According to a Dickens Family history book written by Justin Kirk Dickens, Jonathan Peters also married one Margie Laverty. No wedding date is given. The 1900 Raleigh County Census has the following household in the Marsh Fork District: 312 Jonathan Peters born April 1827 73 years old Mary born April 1827 73 years old Is Sarah Margaret Pittman actually "Margie" Laverty? Was her marriage to Jonathan Peters her 2nd & was her maiden name Laverty? Is she also the Mary in 1900 Raleigh County Census data? Can anyone clarify this dilemma for me? I am also searching for the death date of Jonathan Peters. Can someone with access to Raleigh County death records, please lookup a date for Jonathan Peters? Thank you in advance for any information you may have re: my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters. I look forward to reading you E-mails. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    1. Re: [VAFRANKL] Peter Young of Franklin County, Virginia
    2. Wm Hunt
    3. Michelle; Using your estimate of Peter Young's birth as ca 1785, I looked at the 1787 Personal Property Tax Lists for Franklin Co. to see who was there. One Peter Young is listed as well as 6 other Young males plus one Agness Young, most likely a widow. Peter Young appears 5 times in Franklin Co. Will Book 1, plus 15 other people named Young. Campbell Co. was cut off from Bedford in 1782, but there were no Young on Pers. Prop. list for 1787. In Bedford Co. Index to Wills is listed a James Young w/probate date of 25 May 1778. 1778 was before Franklin was created from Bedford and before your estimated birth date for your Peter Young, but you might want to check out the will of James as he might have been an early progenitor of one line of Youngs in the area. Maybe you'll spot some famiiar names. The Circuit Court in Bedford charges .50 cents per page to copy. Hope this helps. W. M. 2. Hi Folks - I'm seeking information on Lewis Hale who was born in Franklin County on 11 Sep 1742 and his wife, Mary Burwell, who was born in Franklin County in 1744. They were married in Franklin County in 1768 and apparently soon removed to Grayson County, VA where he died 02 Jul 1802 and she died 01 Sep 1809. I know of one child, William, born in Grayson County in 1771 and who married Lucy Stone. Any information on the Hale and Burwell families in Franklin County would be greatly appreciated. Family tradition has it that the Burwell line originated in Jamestown. Thanks in advance for any help. John Tallman Lookout Mountain, Tennessee

    2. Wm Hunt
    3. Sorry I can offer only another thread. It seems to me the surname JOYCE is a bit scarce. But I did find a marriage listed for John C. JOYCE and Gezyah Stuart Dec. 11, 1824 in Grayson Co. VA. On the same list in Grayson were 9 JONES marriages between 1797 and 1826. Grayson County was created in 1793 from Wythe Co. and a part of Patrick later. Patrick Co. was formed from Henry Co.which adjoined Franklin Co. The geography is somewhat compatible but not exactly on target. My source was Anne Lowry Worrell, "Over the Montain Men, Their Early Court Records in Southwest Virginia", originally published 1934 - etc. ask if you need more.
